I have never much cared for the “like” button, but I am certain the spammers like it. Also, I find it difficult to discern what a “like” actually means. So, I am not posting “likes” anymore. I appreciated feedback, but I have no desire to link to porn sites, fraudulent marketers, boneheaded trolls, and such. So, if you want to “like” or “dislike” a post, please write a comment.
Tom,
Interesting point about the like which I have been using mainly as an acknowledgment that I read a post.
Regards and goodwill blogging..
Reblogged this on boudica.us and commented:
Like. It means that I like that you posted an article, not that I either agree, disagree or like the content.
I don’t like the ‘like’ button because it turns blogging into a popularity contest rather than a content-oriented forum where (as you say) comments mean much more. Also, it’s crazy to ‘like’ a post that’s about, say, suicide or a tragic event. I turn the ‘like’ button on and off depending on the content of the post, but I think from now on I’ll just be done with it.
Exactly. Tom and I have disagreed on most things going on years now… so why would I indicate that I “like” something he posted when I most certainly did not. I am sure his feelings are the same for what I post as well. Rather than call it a “like” call it.. “I read the damn thing and so what.” Actually.. allow for a selection of opinion feedback rather than just “like”.
Exactly, opinion feedback. Another thing I hate about the ‘like’ button — and I’ve emailed WordPress about this with no response — is that it puts WordPress in the same sappy sheep-like grouping as Twitter and Facebook — ‘Oh, wow, look how many people liked my post, I’m so popular’ etc etc — gimme a break. Of course there will be people who think my objection to the ‘like’ button is plain old jealousy because I hardly get any ‘likes’, to which all I can say it Fukit.
Very well stated, sir!
@Mich
That has puzzled me too. How is it we are supposed to “like” posts about awful things.
I suppose I should mention one thing. I list the posts I “like” in my blog. That has gotten to be my primary reason for “liking” a post.
I agree with you.. I never use it. I tend to purchase from Ebay fairly often over the years fo feed my electronics/radio hobby and I’ve long given up providing feedback because it’s a nuisance.
@Doug
Never used Ebay. So, I won’t comment on how they get feedback.
I don’t think you have given up on providing feedback or receiving it. I just think you want something substantive.
You think so, doc? Maybe it was when I was dropped on my head as a baby.
