Atheists use the problem of suffering as one of their principal arguments against the existence of God. In his post, Silence of Mind makes observations about the problem of suffering that are well contemplating.
Atheists have two arguments against the existence of God:
- There is no scientific evidence for God, therefore he does not exist.
- All the suffering in the world, especially that of children, proves that God is a genocidal, sadistic maniac. Therefore, such a God, were he to exist, isn’t worth the bother of belief.
First, there is not only scientific evidence of God’s existence, there is scientific proof of God’s existence.
Proof 1: The Big Bang is proof of God’s existence. The universe came into being from an infinitesimally small point that exploded into 4 dimensions approximately 14 billion years ago. It came into being ex nihilo (from nothing). Since nothing in the universe happens all by itself, the universe itself must have a cause. That cause, the First Cause, is God.

Hi Tom, I think you will enjoy this as much as I did. I listened to today’s Dinesh D’Souza’s podcast. He devoted the entire episode (about 50 minutes) to the problem of evil/suffering and he did a really good and at times brilliant job.
