insanitybytes22 has a complaint against her elders, Boomers like myself. Why do some of insanitybytes’ elders act like nasty, mean jerks? My guess is that don’t trust God.
When we don’t trust in God, who do we turn to run the universe? There isn’t anyone. We don’t know anyone else who can run the universe.
The major idols of our era are sex, stuff, science, state, and self. Not one of these is up to making our lives work, much less running the universe. Each is a DEAD END, and deep down everyone knows it. Therefore, by the time we are elderly, if we have not yet turned to God, we must become miserable. We can see our bodies becoming decrepit. We can see the inevitable, and all we can do is what Joseph Stalin did on his death bed, raise his fist against God and curse Him.
I have wondered about the origins of the generation gap. Here is my theory. The generation gap is actually of relatively recent origin. We accidentally “invented” it.
The generation gap is marked by the changing experiences of each generation. Because of technology and the different crises they experience, we expect each generation to have a different view of the world. However, our generational difference should not cause us to have radically differing values. So, what is going on?
Contemplate the effect of the public school system and the mass media.
With each generation, the public school system has gotten more and more secular. That means each generation of children has become more Atheistic than its parents.
What about the mass media? The mass media exists to sell us stuff, often that includes stuff we don’t need. Good Christians are harder to sell. That catch phrase, “You deserve it!” just leaves a Christian wondering why. An Atheist, on the other hand, has no doubt that he or she deserves it.
So, what about those boomers. Shouldn’t we expect those Boomers to be more Christian that those of latter generations? Perhaps, but there probably are not many Conservative Boomers in the state of Washington.
See, there's this thing called biology...
I have decided that what is, “wrong with young people” is that nothing is wrong. Seriously, they are simply healthy young people trapped in a world gone mad. I honestly believe that 90% of our afflictions are about being told we have afflictions rather then the truth which is that, the world is broken.
The world has always been broken. I’ve been doing this for more than half a century and I still need Jesus just to get out of bed in the morning. Sometimes I can’t even manage that.
This idea that everyone is supposed to just be a healthy, well adjusted, successful individual in a world that has completely lost its mind, is just crazy. Anxiety is normal, depression is normal, confusion is normal. And by “normal,” I mean a normal reaction to an unhealthy environment. I watched in real time as our culture went from, “stress is…
