DO THE MORAL VALUES OF OUR PEOPLE PROVIDE A SOUND FOUNDATION FOR OUR LAWS?

Many Christians act as if Jesus and His Bible have nothing to say about government, but we create and enforce laws to enforce moral standards. Name the law, and one of two things will be true.

• That law may be blatantly unethical. We will find someone, at least one person, who gains some advantage from the law at the expense of his neighbors.
• That law will address what some people consider an ethical issue. At least some small group of people will consider it immoral to do what the law prohibits or to not do what the law requires us to do. Hence we have laws against stealing, murder, perjury, assault, reckless driving, libel, slander, embezzlement, false advertising, not stopping at a stop sign, not registering for the draft, and so forth.
