I am hardly what anyone would call a model husband or Christian. Still, because I am married, and because I pray, if only poorly, I contemplate what it means to be a husband who prays.
When we think of Adam, we immediately think of Eve. Why?
Genesis 2:18-25 New American Standard Bible
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper [a]suitable for him.” 19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field, but for [b]Adam there was not found a helper [c]suitable for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 And the Lord God [d]fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,
“At last this is bone of my bones,
And flesh of my flesh;
[e]She shall be called [f]‘woman,’
Because [g]she was taken out of [h]man.”
24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.
God made man incomplete. He made woman because without her man could not be whole, and this is what Adam discovered when he knew Eve. Hence, the Apostle Paul wrote:
Ephesians 5:25-30 New American Standard Bible
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church [a]in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are parts of His body.
How do we know we are fallen creatures? Even though woman was made for man to love and man was made to love a woman, we flounder, muddle, stumble, and stagger in our relationships. To make our marriages work as our Lord intended, we need wisdom and grace that only our Lord can give us. So, it is that when a man prays, if he does not pray for his lady, has not truly prayed for himself.
Tom,
There is so much sadness and hopelessness in our world we all experience in life. I feel so sorry for those who have never been taught to pray during both happy and sad times in life.
Some fall into alcohol and drugs which only helps for a short time.
Prayer is a blessing for both those who pray and those who they pray for.
Regards and goodwill blogging.
I like this a lot Tom. Husbands should pray for their wives and wives shound pray for their husbands, There would sure be a lot less divorce if everyone did thus.
@Tricia
Agreed!
But what about the size of the fig leaf?
@Doug
That is Chapter 3 of Genesis. Before the fall, Adam and Eve had no shame. After the fall, …. Well, God was kind, fortunately. But He still has not allowed us back in Paradise.
One leaf was not enough.
Had not God created the fig leaf they both would have had some s’plaining to do.
@Doug
It is ever since man tried to be God that we have had a lot of explaining to do.
Good point.
