I enjoy listening to Renewing Your Mind ( So, last Sunday I listened to R.C. Sproul ( explain the meaning of Mark 7:1-23, in The Idolatry of Legalism.

In his exposition of Mark 7:1-23, Sproul tells us that the Pharisees had fallen into the trap of legalism (, which is a form of idolatry. Because of their idolatry, the Pharisees earned biting criticism from Jesus.

What had the Pharisees done? They had put the traditions of men ahead God’s Law, the Bible. Instead of allowing the Law to be a blessing, they had substituted their traditions and burdened the Jewish people with numerous, useless regulations.

Why had the Pharisees done such a thing? Pride. The Pharisees followed their traditions to display their holiness, to show themselves as better than what God’s Law…

      1. Are you trying to justify wilfull ignorance by conservatives? And equating sciensts with liberals in the process? Is that your worldview? Anything that challanges your preconceptions must be wrong, because you just _know_ you are right?

        1. @marmoewp

How do you know you are not descibing yourself?

Based upon unproven theories, you want to implement policies that would almost certainly result in great hardship, and the people supporting those policies pretend no hardship would result.

          1. Again, you are playing word games. In science a theory is a body of work comprised of experimental findings and theoretical works, that has stood the test of time and within its limitations allows to make predictions about the systems it studies, see e.g. the Theory of Relativity. These bodies of work do not get proven the way mathematical theorems get proven, as you imply.

As far as I can tell, (you know that I am a physicist) the science of anthropogenic climate change is sound. In addition, I do trust the verdict of the major Scientific Academies of world. I have also had a look at purported arguments against that soundness and found them not just wanting, but failing. It is also public knowledge, that mitigation and adaption require economic major changes and efforts, which invariably involve hardship, as amongst others the whole fossil fuels industry will go down the drains. However, continuing to do business as usual will to the best of our knowledge result in much greater suffering and hardship.

So what do _you_ base your assertion that the theories underlying anthropogenic climate change are “unproven”?

          2. @marmoewp

The consensus of the scientists is a ridiculously weak argument.

When I was in graduate school in the mid 70’s, I asked a Geology professor about Global Warming. He just glared at me and indicated he wanted nothing to do with subject. Since then the consensus has gotten even stronger among government funded academics.

  1. Cool post, Tom. If you want to see genuine change in the world you have to set out to win over hearts and minds, and you have to love people. It’s hard and it takes a whole lot of energy. Much easier to just say, “there oughta be a law” and try to call it good. The law however, does nothing to change hearts.

  2. Tom,

Your post brings up the issue of regulations in relation to accountability.

Because we have lost our path to the understanding that we are all accountable for our personal actions to ourselves and our communities, we try to substitute human regulations to guide on a path.

If we discerned ever actions before we act, we would ask ourselves simply, will God approve my action and the belief we will be accountable for our choice.

Of course, if we are never taught “the truth” as you state, we are incapable of knowing what pleases of displeases our Maker.

So, we make all kinds of regulations, some which may be questionable, such as science which uses the word ‘scientific theory” for a while, until some other scientific theory disproves the original theory or psychology, etc. etc.

Which begs the next question who understood, what is the truth, the way, and the light, to guide us on our paths. (John 14:26)

Or in other words, if we just follow the precepts the Bible of wisdom and lobe, , we will understand the best guidance to find our way on our paths.

    Regards and goodwill blogging.

  3. Thoughtful post Tom. It’s important to remain humble in our politics so we can better discern what is true and what is merely our own preference. And yes politicians will inevitably exploit complicated issues to their advantage, frequently using the cudgel of “science” to ram excessive regulation down our throats.
