WHY WOULD ANYONE VOTE FOR KAMALA HARRIS OR JOE BIDEN?

Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris at the first campaign event of the ticket, on August 12, 2020 (from here (en.wikipedia.org))

Why would anyone vote for Kamala Harris or Joe Biden? The typical answer I get is a non-answer, an attack on Donald Trump. That attack usually consists of a bunch of unsupported assertions. That is, the Harris/Biden supporter starts spouting off all the unsubstantiated charges they have heard in the biased, Liberal Democrat news media. When the bias is so evident, I am sort of amazed these people never investigate the charges. I am even more amazed they don’t seem to know anything about Harris or Biden.

Want to prove me wrong? Go to it. Why are you going to vote for Harris and Biden?

Want to pick at the ignorance of Harris and Biden supporters? Feel free to psychoanalyze Harris and Biden supporters. Let them know how it feels.

  1. Tom,

Agreed. I left the left because of the leftward jump of the Democratic Party. I’ve also been trying to reconsider some of my previous positions on property rights and such. I think one problem with the left is that they don’t think property rights matter much.

  2. If anyone were to believe Trump’s bragging claims such as he built the greatest ever US economy prior to the coronavirus outbreak.

Reality Check verdict: It’s true the economy was doing well prior to the pandemic – continuing a trend which began during the Obama administration – but there have been periods when it was much stronger.

Your President Trump has even claimed he may not commit to election results if he does not win the election, that is simply unbelievable.

You guys are a completely different culture to us, you are far more committed and loyal to your political leaders because regardless of anything they have done or say and do it has become acceptable and believed by the American public regardless of facts.

I wish you luck however because it looks like plenty of trouble brewing ahead for all of you regardless of political indoctrination.

Most of what the world knows about American comes from a news media much of our nation has learned to distrust. Since you use those sources I am not surprised to find you puffing yourself up at our expense.

Actually, that is just the plain truth. Most people who get the Coronavirus don’t go to the hospital. What we hear about — what gets all the hysterical publicity — are the seriously ill.

We produce vaccines for the flu because some people do get seriously ill, but most don’t. Some time in the near future the vaccine for COVID-19 that the Trump administration produced for COVID-19 will become available. That will bring the virus under control. However, even if there were no vaccine the virus would eventually do what all the others have done. People would get it and develop some immunity. The pandemic would cease.

BBC’s measure for “much stronger” is GDP growth. This is a very suspect measure for obvious reasons. It depends entirely on where one is starting from. I’m sure third world countries have had “much stronger” growth than 2.5 percent in a year.

But if we keep the BBC metric…Well, the Atlanta Fed predicts 34% Q3 GDP increase — the largest increase in American history.
So that means Trump is the best, right!?!?!
Looking forward to that BBC retraction I’m sure is forthcoming.

      1. the Atlanta Fed can predict whatever it likes. When you consider Real gross domestic product (GDP) decreased at an annual rate of 31.4 percent in the second quarter of 2020, according to the “third” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter of 2020, real GDP decreased 5.0 percent.

The economy looks as though it can only reverse and catch up to where it was, especially if things start returning to normal but it is to early to start trumpeting rubbish.

Actually, with respect to the virus, the USA is doing okay. The bottom line is the number of people who have died relative to the size of the population, not the number of people detected with the virus.

Underlying point: GDP growth rate is relative. As I said.
You cannot pick and choose to use it as a frame of reference only when it suits you.
If the economy is doing great, it’s a higher bar to bring it higher still.
After a massive pandemic, turning the lights back on, the GDP will probably rise.
Variability is similar after a large recession (which the BBC cites for comparison).

          1. If you really want a measure for economic conditions, ask the American public.
56 percent of the public, in a recent Gallop poll, said they are better off today than four years ago. Yes, even in 2020. The year from hell. 56 percent is actually a record since the time they started asking this Gallop poll question (think it was under Reagan, if memory serves).
            — it was even higher in February, 61 percent said they believed they were better off than three years earlier when Trump took office in January 2017.

  3. Tom,

You asked an academic question and probably expected replies to contain the following:

Supposed to be read for information and analysis of real-life ideas.

    Focused on fact-based information.
    Clearly structured and orderly.
Usually written in third person language only.
Readers of academic writing scan the texts for answers, not questions.

It appears the rhetorical reply you obtained, , for example, “ I’d vote for a grilled cheese sandwich if it were running against the National disgrace that is Donald Trump.

(Sorry if I offend the writer.)

I was hoping to read academic replies as Liz replied, to compare the accomplishments of Biden and Harris

    https://helpfulprofessor.com/rhetorical-questions/

If I was a professor I would give an A to Liz.

Perhaps you should rephrase your question Tom to read,

“What positive accomplishments have Biden and Harris accomplished to earn a voter’s trust that they will be a more wise rather than a foolish choice in the 2020 Presidential election?”

    Regards and goodwill blogging..

  4. Tom,

Well, of course. Trump is the worst President in US history, by far. He’s botched the COVID-19 response, cost hundreds of thousands of lives, made the ensuing Recession worse, enflamed tensions and white identity grievances over racial and caste inequalities that have suddenly been exposed and preloaded the nation’s spiraling debts with tax cuts for a class of rich people who are only getting richer while poor and working class Americans are falling off a cliff. And these are only the most obvious of the Trump Administration’s list of corruptions, incompetences and failures.

I’d vote for a grilled cheese sandwich if it were running against the National disgrace that is Donald Trump. As it is, we have a simple choice between a Democrat with proven basic decency and competence versus a failed narcissistic conman and a fraud. It’s that simple.

The problem with pointing out Trump’s corruption and incompetence isn’t that there are too few examples, it’s that there are seriously too many to list on this forum. They’ll be writing volumes on the Trump debacle for generations to come. If we are lucky, Trump’s greatest accomplishment will be to serve as a warning and a wake up call to all of us not to take democracy for granted because a demagogue of populist Nationalism is always waiting in the wings when we let our guard down. The only great thing about Trump is that he is so pathetically bad at being an autocrat that he has been unable to effectively squelch a free press or the governmental institutions of democracy. We may not be so lucky next time.

  5. This is a really really good (though long) video, from a former teacher, current nurse “walking away” from the Democratic party. Her experiences are very similar to mine (for the short time I was a teacher in the 90s, our experiences were identical).
In explaining why she finally left, she answers the question of why it took her so long, and what her thought pattern as a liberal had been.

    1. Liz,

This is the problem with believing your own propaganda. The so-called “walk away movement” doesn’t actually exist among Democratic and is only “viral” on the Right. This is the Trump cult worship taking wishful thinking to the point of self delusion.

Here’s an article on this nonsense:

      https://www.mediapost.com/publications/article/325207/why-democrats-arent-walking-away-but-walking.html

One thing for Liberals and Conservatives to remember about stuff that they find on the internet from strange sources that sounds too good to be true – it probably isn’t. All the polls showing the Democratic Candidates gaining ground might give good people like you clue that this is so much hogwash, but you just want to believe it do bad, don’t you? Why?

        1. I’m not questioning the power of an anecdote. I’m a big believer.

However, I think the problem is when we confuse mere emotivism with the power and authority of expertise and truth, wishful thinking with actual data. You may find a few folks with videos where mostly unknown individuals supposedly walked away from the Democratic Party. I can show droves of very famous lifelong Republicans who have walked away from Trump and Trumpism, very many of which are actually working to get Biden elected, many of which were from Trump’s own administration, business and family. I can show polling data from both liberal and conservative sources of likely voters disgusted by Trump and voting in increasing numbers for Biden/Harris.

So go ahead and dig yourself deeper and deeper into the silo of your own wishful thinking if you want, but you know that, much as you may want to shoot all the credible messengers and believe in fantasies, the overwhelming force of reality will just keep intruding. And in desparation, Trump will just keep getting kookier and kookier, showing his true plasticity of character, until even you can no longer ignore it.

            Quite true.
Perhaps you can imagine my confusion when a person who says something like this responds to a long and considered anecdote with essentially, “See, this is the problem with believing your own propaganda….(links to pure Michael Moore propaganda piece)”

I have no idea what to make of this response.
        This is an individual’s video.

I must assume you gave it all the interest and attention you gave that link to about 30 different individual and independent medical journal articles in one place (the reason I cited it…it was the most comprehensive I’ve found) because you couldn’t be bothered to look. Then proceeded to site a couple of those studies to explain to me how “wrong” and propagandized I am.

I know, just like before when you presented a tiny kooky political group as the medical authority on mask wearing in a Pandemic. Why not long standing medical authorities? Why not The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet or JAMA, all of which have articles on this (and some of which have actually endorsed Joe Biden, or practically have).

The article I pointed you to is just one of many and just shows for how long it has been since this astro-turf movement has been discredited. Really, you are way too smart to swallow all this propaganda without looking at at least just a little of the mountain of countering information.

          1. Instead of using the power of our imaginations, let’s review what I actually stated.

Here, TSalmon, from the AAPS (American academy of physicians and surgeons), everything anyone could ever want to know about the science of mask wearing, in one link:
            https://aapsonline.org/mask-facts/
Of particular importance are the human studies under real life conditions.

One itty bitty click on that link will show it’s not a “kooky political site”.
            But regardless….
Why not long standing medical authorities? Why not The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet or JAMA, all of which have articles on this (and some of which have actually endorsed Joe Biden, or practically have).

That link supplied exactly this. Links to all the known current studies regarding masks. From the JAMA, the New England Journal of Medicine, the BMJ, the Lancet et all. That is why I supplied it.
You selected a couple of articles. Those studies are readily available at that link. I’m not telling you what to think, I provided a link where you can read all the mask studies available, from the actual sources. Studies done before the pandemic, and during. When new information is available, they add the new study.
There are more current studies than the two you supplied and the most recent are there.

Leadership actually means balancing economic health, security, social stability as well as physical health and the NEJM experts are experts on one of those things.

          4. Nice. I like the literary illusion
            (soma).

Probably, the most damaging thing about Trumpism is loss of objective truth for a whole segment of the population. If everyone’s opinion is equally true, then nobody’s opinion is actually true. The fallacy of the false equivalency becomes the rational norm.

“Leadership actually means balancing economic health, security, social stability as well as physical health…”

True, but according to the vast majority of the credible authorities in each of those areas (some who are former members of Trump’s own administration) Trump has failed miserably on each and every count. That’s ok though, I’m sure you can find some emotive anecdote or some obscure highly partisan authority who love Trump. “Soma” indeed.

          5. Interesting the New England Journal of Medicine praises Xi’s government while condemning Trump. The writeup seems not to understand logistic pipelines or how relying on a country like China for medicines and PPE might impact their delivery during a pandemic. They also helpfully provide a Chinese translation to that piece. Nothing strange about that at all. They provide Chinese translations for all their editorials don’t they? Oops….no. That doesn’t seem to be the case.
Nothing to see here. During an election year. An editorial intended to influence the vote and praising Xi.
Guess that’s just me being “emotive”.

Nothing to see here, let’s get back to listening to secret tapes of Melania saying she hates Christmas decorations. Or anonymous sources claiming to hear Trump call (some respected group) stupee evil poopie heads.

  6. well, I must admit that my knee-jerk answer to your rhetorical question in the title of your post was “because they are idiots” but then I realized that that was not very kind of me.
So my more earnest answer would be because they, those particular voters, dislike Trump so very much that they would jeopardize our democracy, erring on the side of lunacy, socialism and marxism—all of which is so utterly frightening…just to vote for two people who don’t know what they’re talking about.

I fear those two people know what they are talking about. Biden’s dementia is somewhat exaggerated, but his morals have always been questionable. Harris morals also seem to be dubious.

What about “those particular voters”? I think you go about as far as we can. When we are talking about half of the electorate, we cannot lump them all together. What does seem apparent, however, is that they have little good to say about either Harris or Biden, and that is odd.
