It is one of those things a citizen of the United States would almost have to be dead not to notice. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died. Here was the initial reaction from several Liberal news media publications.

How is the battle to replace Ginsburg shaping up? Here is the Liberal perspective again.

  1. Tom,

If I remember right, the Republicans would not confirm an Obama SCOTUS nominee when Justice Scalia passed away until after the election which was months away from the election.

In my opinion, the Senate should do the same and Trump should make a point that this election is even more vital for the Republicans to wins,

I hope Trump wins to appoint a Conservative nominee to end the Progressive rulings in past that are contrary to what our founders envisioned for our Nation, .

Because Republicans had a majority in the Senate, with the election so close they would have been foolish to approve an Obama nominee. Obama’s appointments are a disgrace.

So, here is one issue where I must emphatically disagree, and upon reflection I think you will agree with me.

      There are two issues.
      1. Why does the Supreme Court exist? The job of the Justice is to make just decisions. They consider cases that literally involve life and death, and these cases have national significance. Abortion is just one example.
      2. Both the president and the member of the Senate were elected to serve out full terms. If they try to use the replacement Ginsburg as an election issue instead of doing their jobs, most Conservative voters will see that as a betrayal. We want our guys to fight tooth and nail. We need fighters, elected officials who understand the survival of our constitutional republic, is worth fighting for, not people who play politics.

      1. Tom,
While I heartily agree with the need to return the Court back where it should be, reality is this issue might turn into another rallying point for a lot of hateful or angry people who will be influenced or motivated to vote who have no idea of what they are voting for in the coming election.

In my opinion, what is worse than not voting is a person who does not know what they are voting for. The reality is there are a lot of people who will vote for anybody as long as it is not Trump. Sad.

        1. Interesting….I thought I’d posted but it doesn’t appear here. Lost in the spam queue? It didn’t have a link.
At any rate, I was going to add that I also look at this differently now that the democrats are threatening violence. Some veiled, some not so veiled. I don’t respond well to threats. Makes me far less likely to comply.

          1. Tom,
I hope they do but frankly doubt they will based on the news hype i am hearing about Senators Murkowski and Collins.

  2. While I am sure that Conservatives everywhere were monitoring Ginsburg’s every heartbeat to the end to have the Trump-chance of getting another Conservative on the court to reverse Roe v. Wade.. and of course keep hands off the Second Amendment (nothing in the land is more important to Conservatives.. the pandemic be damned), there are a couple notable hypocrisies to point out.

“In 2016, McConnell consistently made one argument for not filling the seat: It was an election year, and voters should decide which presidential candidate should pick the next justice.
Other Senate Republicans followed suit. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who is the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said weeks after Scalia’s death: “I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say, ‘Lindsey Graham said let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination.”

All of that lovely hypocrisy video can be viewed here….
    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mitch-mcconnell-supreme-court-vacancy-election-year-senate/

A good election strategy for Trump might have been to stall the selection process and make is a campaign promise (“If you elect me I will appoint another judge to the court.”) to try and attract doubting Conservatives to stay with him and the GOP senators up for re-election… and should he lose the election then the Senate could force a vote during the lame duck session to assure that Trump legacy. But typical Trump is missing that and just grabbing because he pretty much senses he is going to lose.
Might be a demonstration or two.. hardly worth a march on Washington.. but I don’t think anything is going to happen over a SCOUTUS appointment . Gorsuch was the real fight… nothing happened there.
Ask yourself this.. what happens if Trump gets covid? What happens if Trump or Biden gets a stroke or a heart attack? Trump is NO crowning example of good health and is as vulnerable as Biden. We have a lot of topsy-turvy possibilities to come in the few weeks ahead. Health problems with the major players is just one of many possibilities. It ain’t over till it’s over.

Senator Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham do say things that make them sound like lame and foolish Democrats.

If your party has a majority in the Senate, and you don’t like the guy in the White House, you can delay confirming judicial appointments until the next election. Otherwise, you can confirm them.

President Trump was elected. The people in the Senate were elected. The American people have had a voice. Republicans have no reason to delay.

You do realize that I could equally ridiculous quotes from Democrats who took the opposite stance when it suited them, but hypocrisy does not stick to Democrats. To Democrats the end justifies means. So what would be the point.

Trump and the GOP cannot delay the appointment and confirmation of a replacement for Ginsburg. It would make them look weak, and you know It. So cut the carp.

Your own comment indicates this appointment is a big deal. Anyway, time will prove us right or wrong soon enough.

      1. You pretty much got me wrong on my feeling of a judgeship appointment being such a big deal. It’s true that on certain idealist Liberal/Conservative perceptions the Court can tend to sway to the majority perception. But you are missing the greater point here. Once they become judges it’s way less about Dem/GOP party loyalty and personality likes and dislikes and far more about expressing sage juris prudence and a legacy of fairness. Also, as time advances judges are human like the rest of us and tend to mellow as they age… and many times earlier strict adherence to ideology can change as well. I do hope for a female appointment actually… but other than that… it’s like the Orange Man said about the Covid threat.. it is what it is. As a nation we have far greater priorities than worrying about a SCOTUS selection.
As for McConnell, Graham, et al… seems their three-senator majority might be a little shaky.

I was hoping she would get the nomination last time. The only thing that bothers me is the way Democrats tear into Conservative women. Odious! Their ugly, bitter hatred is obvious. However, they are rough on the guys too. So, if a good woman is willing to stand up to that rabble, I will support her.

          2. With a female nominee I am sure that there will be no sexual impropriety, #MeToo surprises surfacing from her years in college. Although… if the nominee is old enough, there was that national bra burning phase and there could be a photograph lingering about. If not, maybe the Russians can photoshop a reasonable facsimile.

When you express your opinion on the make-up of the Supreme Court, there is a word that comes to mind, “sophistry”. That is Greek for BS.

You say the Senate GOP includes squishy RINOs? Who would have ever guessed?

Trump has shown he is willing to fight. If he makes the nomination and fights for it, and most of the GOP senators wholeheartedly support him, the squishes will most likely do so too. If they don’t, and Trump loses by a few votes, he has a good argument for increasing the GOP majority.

Doing nothing argues for doing nothing.
