THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOVE, JOY, AND WISDOM — PART 1

Here is a subject that has generated considerable interest on this blog. So check out THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOVE, JOY, AND WISDOM.

Prince William-Manassas Family Alliance

Pentecost by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (from here)

What is the relationship between love, joy, and wisdom? Consider the following passage. Jesus knows He will soon die. So, He strengthens His apostles for the shock of His death. In middle of a series of monologues, He gives his apostles this instruction.

John 15:9-11New American Standard Bible (NASB)

9 Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.11 These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.

Of Joy In Love

Why would anyone love someone else as much as they love themselves? Why would anyone do what Jesus did, die for…

  1. Great post Tom!

I especially note from your Scriptural examples that you show that joy comes from the grace of the Holy Spirit put into dynamic action by our loving and being loved as Jesus loved and was loved.

I also like the way that you show that discernment begins with an impartial attitude (or motive) in love from which more perfect discerning of moral conduct flows. In this sense the discernment is neither transactionally moralistic (I get this from God if I give God a some necessarily imperfect but legalistic obedience) nor is it Antinomian (pretends to exalt Jesus but is contemptuous of an obedience and “makes void the law through a faith that does not work by love”).

I look forward to reading you next post in this series.

  2. Very cool subject, Tom! Love, joy, and wisdom are kind of all opposites of one another, so it really takes a Divine touch to show us how to bring the 3 together in perfect harmony.
Something that fascinates me in human behavior, love can be very painful and so can wisdom. I am learning that joy can also be painful. Joy is what comes in the morning…after our suffering. Or joy is the Good News of having been rescued from our suffering.

Glad you found the post cool.😎

Love, joy, and wisdom are kind of all opposites of one another, ….

Had not thought of them as opposites, but maybe they are. Be interested in “hearing” you explain.

I guess all virtues have something to do with pain. After all, Aristotle consider the pursuit of virtue the pursuit of happiness. Here is a list of 40 virtues => https://www.familiesofcharacter.com/devblog10809/2018/3/21/what-are-the-40-virtues-full-list. Takes a bit of effort to recognize how each virtue relates to pain.

  3. My “father in Christ” who led me to the Lord had been a Marine Corps officer in Vietnam. He suffered grievous injuries when he smothered a grenade to spare his men. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13.
