Here we have Part 4 in “The Grand Conspiracy”. Here are the three previous posts:

What is this post about?

Stuff, Sex, Science, State, and Self: America’s Pagan Idols

This is a subject I have written about fairly frequently (see sex stuff science state self site:citizentom.com). What is different here? Here we will relate increasing decadence to the generation gap. We will consider who has encouraged us to sin. We will also ask who is encouraging our children to sin.

Consider the present, the huge split in our nation. Consider our parents and grandparents. Consider our children and grandchildren. Consider this question.

Are the people who teach us making us better people or increasingly vile sinners?

Did you watch President Donald J. Trump deliver his second State of the Union Address? Here is the video.

What was the theme of Trump’s address to the nation? Make America Great Again? Trump never used that phrase, but the word “great” appears in his speech nineteen times. Consider these quotes.

Now we must step boldly and bravely into the next chapter of this great American adventure, and we must create a new standard of living for the 21st century.

I hope you can pass the USMCA into law so that we can bring back our manufacturing jobs in even greater numbers, expand American agriculture, protect intellectual property, and ensure that more cars are proudly stamped with our four beautiful words: “Made in the USA.”

Both parties should be able to unite for a great rebuilding of America’s crumbling infrastructure.

Great nations do not fight endless wars.

We must choose whether we squander our great inheritance or whether we proudly declare that we are Americans.

In his speech Trump constantly hearkened back to a time when America, when the American people, were better. Why? Isn’t Trump trying to restore values that once made America great?

Why is there so much hostility to Trump? To Conservatives? To Republicans? What divides America? What makes the generation gap so significant? What issues divide America? Whether we agree with Trump or not, it is fair to say that Trump touched on some of them.

When children are instructed by members of their family or people their parents have selected, what are the odds those children will learn to share their parents values? How would you expect the odds to change when politicians choose who teaches children and what the children UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE GOVERNMENT can learn? Would you expect:

  • Children to be taught what is politically beneficial to the ruling party?
  • Politicians to sell special interest groups access to our children so those special interests could indoctrinate other peoples children?
  • Children to learn traditional American values and become familiar with the God of the Bible, or learn to idolize sex, stuff, science, state, and self?

Why do parents — why do we — allow politicians to control how we educate our children? Is it because that education is “free”? Is it because they are offering us other people’s money to educate our children? Is this really a good deal? Or is it stealing and just foolhardy?

When we allow politicians to buy our vote, we have to vote for someone unethical enough to take someone else’s money and spend it for our benefit. If that politician is unethical enough to buy our vote, he will also be unethical enough to sell our children to the highest bidders.

So consider. Is the generation gap inevitable, or is it the result of naive parents trusting people, politicians, people nobody says they trust, with the instruction of their children?

Is it that difficult to believe that the generation gap is not inevitable? Then how do we stop unethical politicians from creating increasingly wider gaps between us and our children and grandchildren? We can vote for school choice. We can work to get government out of the education business.

I think we have given too much power to others to influence our children… As a nation, we once took more individual responsibility for the education and care of our own children. Somewhere along the way, our culture abandoned that responsibility in exchange for ease. This is an extremely powerful and important post! I wish we could publish it from the mountain tops!           You then answered — “Public education took off in the United States starting around the 1830’s. A fellow named Horace Mann gets most of the credit.”

          My new Q — So are you saying that we took more interest before the 1830’s as a nation? OR We took interest in the 1830’s only?

            We take more interest in the things we do ourselves, don’t we?

            The public school system produced an unintended consequence, especially as we went from locally run one-room school houses to vast city and county-wide school systems. Parents lost control of who teaches their children and what their children are taught. Politicians are not the people we want making such decisions, but lots of parents don’t even see the problem.

            My response — Are you saying that parents are no longer allowed to teach their children? Or That they are forced to send them to public school?

    My response — A good first step would be to stop the hypocrisy spoken from dedicated party tribalism. Children learn from their parents to be dishonest in politics by ignoring the sins of their party while they point out the sins of other parties.

    This bad behavior is in direct conflict with biblical teachings and a sure sign of why there are gaps between children and parents.

    Second, we could stop the hero worship of leaders. I have noticed that praise is given to leaders in office when they are simply there to do the job of the people. This type of hero worship takes away from God and is an abomination.

    We need to stop this bad behavior and simply hold leaders to a normal work standard.

      Except for living and spreading the message of the Gospel, I don’t know what to do about the first problem you mentioned. We don’t share the Gospel for political reasons, but when people practice Biblical teachings there are political benefits.

      Hero worship is wrong, but we should try to elect people we can honor and respect. It is a good thing to have heroes, people we can use as role models. Still, I agree we have to remember that a hero is still human, that God is ultimately the one who determines who succeeds and who fails.

    I have yet to read the first three parts but I do agree with the main theme here. You pose the question “Is the generation gap inevitable” and my answer would be yes. I remember asking my great grandmother about her daughters (one my grandmother) growing up and she mentioned how they seemed to have a mind of their own. The same held true for my mother and my daughters and now my grand and great grandchildren.The fact that outside (secular) influences and culture changes affect generations should not come as a surprise to anyone especially “Christians”. You correctly point out the biblical solution to the Generation Gap Proverbs 22:6.

      You are right, and that is the way I hoped people would see the generation gap.

      We sure don’t make carbon copies of ourselves, but we can do our best to teach our children to look to Jesus for answers.

    LOL! I kind of appreciated this comment from tsalmon,Tom. That’s just it, I’m not really looking for a moral leader, I already have one. I’m just looking for a somewhat ordinary man who shares my agenda and my vision for America. That’s a real difference between the left and the right, the left always DO seek a moral leader. That’s why there is now such an obsession with identity politics and social justice.

    A bit funny, but if you really want to make your point about the need to get our kids out of the public school system, my far left, very liberal parents home schooled…. and wound up with three conservatives. 🙂

      When we begin to worship the state, we start insisting that our Dear Leader make our decisions, especially moral decisions, for us.

      What distinguishes authoritarian and totalitarian governments from a republic? In a republic, individuals insist upon the right to make their own moral decisions. Why? Wise people trust in God, not some phony posing as a god who decides how everyone else should live.

      What is the first indication that a republic has begun to fall? Phonies begin to insist they must provide moral leadership. It is what we call a welfare state, and it includes lunacies like infanticide.

      Glad you got the humor.

      I agree that we don’t expect moral perfection. However, the most important thing that I learned in the military is that basic moral integrity is essential to effective leadership. If you honestly demonstrate and promote basic selfless ideals of loyalty, courage, honesty and honor, then people will follow you anywhere and they will also try to live up to those ideals. If, as a leader, you act and preach dishonesty, selfishness and greed then that is what you get from everyone.

      Trump lies continuously in large and small ways. Trump’s whole life and everything he promotes is all “me first”.

          Unless you have bought into the myth of “alternative facts”, many statements are simply either true or they are not. And I am not just talking about opinions. Trump verifiably makes up factual lies constantly. Just because some news sources are more inclined to fact check and point out those lies while others prefer to ignore them, does not miraculously make them not lies. You are doing the equivalent of shooting one messenger just because you don’t like the truth he tells you and praising another messenger just because you prefer his lies.

  5. Excellent post. I have read a few articles that a large percentage of parents given a choice prefer to send their kids to schools of their choice that teach values of theirs rather that government based on what political entity is elected.

    In other words just because a person wins an election does not make them a god.

  8. Hmm. My problem is that all the baby boomers in my neck of the woods are actually liberals and quite ticked off at Trump. I think that there really is a generation gap and I think public education has made a mess of things, but I think we should be careful assuming young people don’t hold similar values. Those Covington Catholic boys who were harassed, were actually young and at a prolife demonstration. It was the much older ones who were doing all the attacking.

    I find it fascinating when many conservatives say pretty much what you have said, “In his speech Trump constantly hearkened back to a time when America, when the American people, were better.” So, I actually grew up around the Weathermen Underground, Marxism, and Bill Ayers was the hero of the day. I’m still trying to get all the old radicals as far away from our Gov as possible so we can, “make America great again.” I have no idea where this time when “Americans were better” was located because it wasn’t my time at all. I’m not even sure it ever existed, but obviously I’ll chase the idea anyway. 🙂

      I agree that there is a difference between societal trends and specific individuals. In defense of my position, however, I think it is worth pointing out that those Covington Catholic school boys are going to a private school chosen by their parents.

      I have no idea where this time when “Americans were better” was located because it wasn’t my time at all. I’m not even sure it ever existed, but obviously I’ll chase the idea anyway.

      Is it difficult to measure the moral character of a people? Yes, but that is what the battle between Trump and the Liberal Democrats is all about. When Trump says, “Make America Great Again!”, they know he is accusing them of degrading our nation.

      Trump is fighting for traditional moral values, smaller government, and school choice. He is setting an example as a politician who seeks to serve the people. Liberal Democrats hate him, and Never Trumpers can’t stand the fact he is actually doing what they only promised to do.

      So are America’s traditional moral values better? Do we need to restore smaller government, that is, our constitutional republic? Is school choice a better idea? Don’t we want to elect politicians who seek to serve the people?

      Well, I don’t doubt that a Liberal Democrat will scream bloody murder about the slavery, racism, and religious bigotry in America’s past. I don’t doubt Liberal Democrats will praise the virtues of Socialism and proclaim that our public school system is necessary so that we can share a common, national identity. I don’t doubt Liberal Democrats will tell us once again that Trump is a liar who colluded with the Russians. Yet I don’t believe that politicians can be trusted with all the power Liberal Democrats demand.

      Democrats have a long history of using the government to put various groups of people under their thumb. Can you imagine these words coming from the mouth of a modern Liberal Democrat?

      We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

      Even though Thomas Jefferson founded their party and wrote those words — even though those words have resounded around the world — Liberal Democrats politicians don’t believe them. So better or not, there is nothing to gain by trusting Liberal Democrats politicians with power, and there is everything to lose.
