Julie (aka Cookie) has a habit of posting great inspirational quotes. One of her recent posts, All Souls Day, included a quote with this line.

Lift up your spirit, and love God.”

Lift up your spirit? What does that mean?

Next week we will have an election. Lots of us have paid too much attention to an angry news media. So we have assigned a great deal of importance to this election. So whichever side loses will tend to be downcast, and whichever side wins will tend to be elated. That is foolishness.

What does it mean to lift up our spirits? Well, here is what I think. It depends upon whether we love God.

1 John 4:19 English Standard Version (ESV)

19 We love because he first loved us.

If we love God, if we realize He loves us, then it is much easier to lift up our spirits. We know that for all eternity we will be blessed by the love of our Creator, that whatever happens it will be for the best.

Yes indeed, love unquestionably will uplift your spirits.

And, yes indeed, on Election Day, only one face will temporarily disappear based on the voter choices we make.

However, we must make wise choices who or what to love every day, in order to see what we will see for eternity

“Wisdom is the quality that keeps you from getting into situations where you need it.”

    Regards and good will blogging..

  2. When we place God first in our lives, none of the outside influences of the world should steal our joy. The only one who can do that is the devil and his lies run rampant even in our churches. We must keep reminding ourselves that our peace is assured through the love of God. Then everything else seems meaningless.

  3. Amen, Tom! Julie is great.

Our pastor made me laugh today. He said that on election day some will win and some will lose, but we can all be thankful because come election day, we will never have to look at these two irritating people ever again. Then he posted a pic of the candidates for the 8th congressional district. It was quite funny, because they have driven the whole state nuts with their relentless ads.

He did a great job preaching on that very thing, “lifting up your spirit” by practicing thankfulness.

      Great point!

Instead of taking God seriously and being thankful for Him, we take ourselves too seriously. Julie has enough wisdom to take God seriously. Seems your pastor does too.

  4. Thank you, Tom.
You remind us of what is truly important…and to what is not…that being our foolishness in fleeting worldly pettiness.
The only lasting goodness is found in a gracious and giving God—gracious and giving when we do not deserve such.
