Congressional Republican leaders released the final version of a proposed $1.3 trillion spending bill Wednesday evening, approximately 52 hours before the deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown.
The 2,232 page “omnibus” bill was made public hours after House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., dashed through a Washington snowstorm to meet with President Trump at the White House amid concerns that Trump’s support for the package was wavering. The White House later said the president backed the legislation, even as some conservative Republicans balked at the size of the spending increases and the rush to pass the bill. (continued here)
Republicans ran on ending such nonsense. They have majorities in BOTH the Senate and the House of Representatives. The filibuster is NOT in the Constitution. There is no excuses for spending our money without even knowing what they are voting on. There is no excuse for passing laws they don’t even know they are voting for.
What is rush to sign a huge bill no one has had the time to study? So the government shuts down? That’s a phony crisis. It has “shut down” for weeks, and the world did not end. On the other hand, we are wasting money by the trillions, piling on useless debt.
What do bills like this prove? Too many of the people we sent to congress are not doing their jobs. They just vote for whatever their leadership puts in front of them and then make excuses. We must hold them accountable.
Congress is up for election this year. That includes primary elections. Make sure you know how your congressman votes. If he or she has competitors for the Republican nomination, please consider voting for one of them.
