What do we send people to Congress to do? Appease spendaholics in the Democratic Party? Are they suppose to vote for bills when it is not even possible for them to know what is in them?

Congressional Republican leaders released the final version of a proposed $1.3 trillion spending bill Wednesday evening, approximately 52 hours before the deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown.

The 2,232 page “omnibus” bill was made public hours after House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., dashed through a Washington snowstorm to meet with President Trump at the White House amid concerns that Trump’s support for the package was wavering. The White House later said the president backed the legislation, even as some conservative Republicans balked at the size of the spending increases and the rush to pass the bill. (continued here)

Republicans ran on ending such nonsense. They have majorities in BOTH the Senate and the House of Representatives. The filibuster is NOT in the Constitution. There is no excuses for spending our money without even knowing what they are voting on. There is no excuse for passing laws they don’t even know they are voting for.

What is rush to sign a huge bill no one has had the time to study? So the government shuts down? That’s a phony crisis. It has “shut down” for weeks, and the world did not end.  On the other hand, we are wasting money by the trillions, piling on useless debt.

What do bills like this prove? Too many of the people we sent to congress are not doing their jobs. They just vote for whatever their leadership puts in front of them and then make excuses. We must hold them accountable.

Congress is up for election this year. That includes primary elections. Make sure you know how your congressman votes. If he or she has competitors for the Republican nomination, please consider voting for one of them.

  1. Lol Julie, I’m with you! How about the Bill Buckley method of picking he first 300 names out of a phone book? Wait, I don’t think phone books exist anymore….

  2. It’s absurd the way we allow our government to be run. Even more so is that the so called conservative Congress and President who hold the majorities will pass this porker of a bill.

It’s always good to be wise on who you vote for but it seems this doesn’t much matter. Politicians either blatantly lie about their dedication to fiscal conservatism to get elected or they toss their principles out the window once in office.

      1. Lucky in that Hilary didn’t win yes,but Trump is no fiscal conservative. He didn’t campaign on this so we shouldn’t be surprised nor blame him that the government will not shrink under his administration. Still, the dollar amounts are obscene, something no Republican President should be associated with.

Politicians gain power by spending money. They use some of what they spent to reward their constituencies and cronies. So long as we, as their constituencies, are willing to let them buy our votes with these rewards, we are stuck with the current system, which will get worse over time.

  3. Reminds me of an idiom. “There is no fool like an old fool.”

Which experiences of the two were wiser is a matter of opinion.

One gained Presidency in his experience, the other came in second to a person many consider to be a fool, while others consider Obama to be a hero in their eyes, which leads to another idiom.

“Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.”

Your choice, your eyes, your opinion who you would want to choose to follow into a battle.

In ancient times, military leaders were chosen by the men who they wanted to lead them into a battle with their enemies.

    Let the battle begin?

  4. Rather hearkens back a couple decades ago when Speaker Gingrich and his republicans did the Contract With America after their winning the Congressional majority in a “Throw the bums out!” campaign against the sitting Dems.

  5. Tom don’t sweat on it.

As a comparison of the present national debt to USA assets, I saw on OAN news that the historical Louisianan Territory purchase which gained one third of the present USA territory is valued in today’s dollars in an amount equivalent to 20 trillion dollars.

Based on the time it took Bush and Obama presidencies to run up the debt, I estimate the balance remaining of two thirds of the USA assets to last another 20 years.

Which therefore will leave the USA to be owned by other nations from the accumulated dollars they have on hand from USA trade deficits.

The end result will be another Boston Tea Party revolt and Revolutionary War based on the same premises.

In other words, nothing new under the sun, what folly of man will do in the past will be done again and again and again in every future generation according to King Solomon’s Ecclesiastes.

That is providing we wise up.

    Regards and goodwilll blogging.

  6. The President of the United States and the former Vice President of the United States are now challenging each other to a school yard brawl. I guess Doug’s “Cold Civil War” is over and the real Civil War has begun with a trial by combat. May the best septuagenarian win! 😆
