On November 7, 2017 we will be having a General Election in Virginia. The Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, the Attorney General, and the House of Delegates will be on the ballot. Who will be on the ballot in the 13th House District.

The Democrat nominee is Danicia Roem. The Republican nominee is Bob Marshall. Marshall is the incumbent. In Part 1 we will consider Danicia Roem‘s qualifications.

Danicia Roem — The Transgendered Candidate

Who is Danicia Roem? Roem’s primary claim to fame is that he identifies as transgendered female (actual sex is male). Therefore, we get this odd behavior from the Democrats. At the same time we are suppose to treat Roem’s attempt to change his sex as perfectly ordinary — no big deal — the news media glorifies him and promotes him as a transgendered candidate. Considered the titles of today’s news listings for Roem’s at The Virginia Public Access Project.

Typical is this quote.

Yes, Danica Roem is the first transgender candidate in Virginia history. And yes, she’s opposing ultra-conservative Republican Bob Marshall, who introduced a bill to restrict which bathrooms transgender people can use. But what she wants to talk about is traffic.

“My mother’s been commuting up and down Route 28 for more than 30 years to provide for her family, and she’s had to sit in this miserable traffic since the 1980’s. That is so wildly unacceptable.” (from here)

Even though Roem is the first transgender candidate in Virginia history, the news media and the Democrats (pretty much one and the same) want to paint Marshall as a weird and extreme nut focused on crazy social issues. That involves a huge contortion of reality. Just consider the starting point. How is conferring special rights on people confused about their sex not a crazy social issue, but trying to keep men out of the lady’s room is?

What does Roem claim qualifies him to represent the 13th House District in the General Assembly? He has worked as a reporter for local papers since 2006 (see bio).  His final job before deciding to run for office was as the news editor of the Montgomery County Sentinel in Rockville, Maryland.

Has Roem’s background given him any special insight with respect to the issues? Well, here are his four top issues.

  • Traffic: Roem thinks his his experience as a reporter qualifies him to redesign our transportation system. Please check Roem’s explanation on website, and please note that Roem specifically states he is against toll roads (that is, user fees). Instead, he wants to redirect our tax dollars to solve the problems he has identified. That’s wrong! What does a reporter know about building transportation systems? Ordinarily, in a free market, we pay for what we want and depend upon experts risking their own money to figure out how to make what we are willing to pay for. At least, when we pay tolls, we pay for something we are willing to use. If we went to a system that requires tolls to pay off the bonds we use to fund new construction, nobody would buy bonds for a road they do not believe is needed.
  • Jobs: Roem proposes two things: extending the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) westward from Broad Run (near Manassas Airport) to Innovation and increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour. These proposals are foolish. To get his VRE extension, Roem would have the state pay for an academic study. Supposedly, academics know how to bring the cost of building railroads down. He is actually serious about this.  At the same time he ignores the plain fact that raising the minimum wage just prices unskilled laborers out of work.
  • Schools: Roem proposes to fix our schools by: expanding the commercial tax base (raise more tax dollars), alleviating overcrowding with smarter growth, and increasing teacher pay in Prince William County. This section is mostly filled with meaningless buzz words. As a state official, the most important thing Roem could do to help Prince William County is to empower local officials to make decisions about local matters, but he apparently has no intention of doing that.
  • Equality: On his website, Roem’s statement here avoids controversy. His 2017-07-15_Danica Roem mailer is slightly more specific. He supports the DREAM Act, civil rights, voting rights, women’s rights, LGBTQ equality, raising the minimum wage, making healthcare insurance more affordable and accessible for everyone. In other words, Roem supports special LGBTQ rights, thinks the minimum wage and healthcare are rights, but he has no problems with little details like losing your job because of a minimum wage hike and being forced to pay for some of the strange things people call healthcare. Undoubtedly, he would support having taxpayers pay for transgendering the sexually confused.

Where are Danicia Roem‘s campaign funds coming from? Because of Roem’s transgendered status and Marshall’s reputation as a staunch Conservative, this race is being nationalized.  So most of Roem’s funding is coming from outside Virginia. Here is what vpap.org showed as of today.

  • The Virginia Public Access Project‘s data on the candidates for member House of Delegates District 13
  • Prince William Democrats raise more money than GOP candidates (insidenova.com): Here is a quote from the article:

Roem accounted for nearly half of the entire Democratic total by pulling in almost $87,000 during one month. She emerged from a four-way primary to challenge  Del. Bob Marshall, R-13th District, and her status as the first transgender woman to appear on a Virginia ballot has attracted national headlines.

The insidenova.com article glosses over certain details. Here are some examples. Most of Roem’s money is coming from outside the state. Del. Jackson Miller, R-50th District, is recovering from the death of his wife. Del. Bob Marshall, R-13th District, has been helping his wife deal with a critical medical issue.

  • Danica Roem Is Making Trans Political History In Virginia (thedailybeast.com): Here is a quote from the article.

“Delegate Marshall said in The Washington Post that he wants to keep this debate on the issues [and] I do too,” Roem said, when asked about Marshall’s statement.

But she added: “If he makes personal attacks at me, if he misgenders me, that becomes an issue. It is absolutely fundamentally not OK to single out and stigmatize one of your constituents—to basically say that you know who I am better than I do.”

  • Danica Roem (ballotpedia.org): Check the endorsements.

  • Virginia Democrats select Danica Roem, a transgender journalist, for state government (salon.com): Here is a quote from the article.

Roem, a former reporter for the Prince William Times, defeated three primary candidates on Tuesday, starting a general election campaign in which she hopes to help the Democratic Party retake control of Virginia’s legislative chamber.

“People are tired of the fact he is focused on discriminatory social policies instead of bread-and-butter, quality-of-life issues they face every day,” Roem told The Post. “He is more concerned with where I go to the bathroom than where his constituents go to work. I’m running a race on improving transportation rather than ensuring discrimination.”

  • Va. transgender candidate raised nearly 20 times more than GOP opponent in June (washingtonpost.com)

Va. transgender candidate raised nearly 20 times more than GOP opponent in June (washingtonpost.com): Here is a quote from the article. Chris Abele, the county executive in Milwaukee and chairman of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, gave $35,000, her report shows. Flippable, the New York political consulting firm that has targeted Virginia as a place to win more Democratic seats, donated $10,000.

Author’s note: Like Del. Bob Marshall, I too am guilty of “misgendering” Danica Roem. I must admit I am a bit confused. I don’t wish to insult the man, but Danica Roem is literally a man, not a woman. We don’t get to choose our sex; we can just modify our appearance and alter our behavior.

Here is what the Bible says.

Deuteronomy 22:5 New King James Version (NKJV)

“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.

Imagine you are a straight man or woman, and you find yourself attracted to a transgendered individual, not knowing his or her actual sex. How far would this relationship have to go before you got upset when you finally discovered the truth?

  1. Hope I did not offend you for making light out of your post. I am getting so used to reading news reports about the candidate’s qualifications running for offices it has become to symbolize both faces of entertainment masks that portray the sad and funny aspects of the theater.

For example, your candidate in Virginia is gathering support for being a transgender hero.

We have a Senator in Illinois who has gathered favor and support because she lost two legs in Afghanistan as a helicopter hero.

Between the two heroes, the Illinois Senator would be my pick for being a more apropos genuine hero. . Even though she has never accomplished anything notable in the various public offices after she was appointed to administer after she was endorsed and appointed by the Illinois Democrat politicians

Guess the armed services now needs to change their Slogan

“ Uncle Sam wants you to be anything you want to be, ”

“Uncle Sam wants you to be anything, including any sex you want to be.”

Either we can choose to laugh or cry is the irony and folly of some of the decisions being made by government officeholders, in my opinion.

    Regards and goodwill blogging.

    1. No offense taken. If we can’t laugh at this craziness,… well, God gave us a sense of humor so we would not take ourselves too seriously.

Thank you for the comments and lightening things up.

  2. Great Post, unfortunately after reading, I doubt I would vote for either of them if I lived in your State.

Instead, I would propose to become your election manager and begin your campaign with you making a UTube presentations singing a song that came to my mind after reading your post..

Except you would have to change the verse words as follows

    From ‘history’ To ‘government’

From I love you To I love Virginia

Your motto would be I running as your “one and and one makes two.,

To ” one and one makes for good government..”

I would even donate 35 bucks to your campaign even though I don’t live in your state.

    What Song?

Check it out on this link

However, I warn you, you may have to take some risks. My advice is don’t get shot with your pants down under suspicious circumstance like the singer.

    Regards and goodwill blogging.
