bibleI spent most of my blogging time this weekend commenting on other blogs. Since I found them interesting enough to comment, I thought I would share links to some of the posts.

Anyway, I decided to fashion one the comments I left at ‘s post into a post of my own.

The Calming Fear Of The Lord

Can we prove God exists. I think so. Yet because we cannot agree upon the threshold required for proof, we have trouble (mostly because so many fear to believe) trying to prove God exists.

Why do we fear the existence of God? If God exists — once we admit God exists — we no longer own ourselves. Because He is our Creator, we belong to Him.

But why do we fear belonging to the Lord? Is not one of the most common phrases in the Bible is “fear not”? The Bible doesn’t tell us to run around in constant terror of the Lord? Do some people do that? Of course, they do, but it is a shame when people are that confused.

The Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV) contains 63 instances of “fear not.” Here is a good example.

Isaiah 41:10 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee:
be not dismayed; for I am thy God:
I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee;
yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Because the belief in God involves a carrot and a stick, fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but it is not the end of it.

That stick, that fear is the fear a child has for his or her father. The carrot is love, and the carrot is absolutely required. Without the belief God loves us — without the realization He truly does care for us — we cannot trust God. We will not return His love.

Is there a Hell? Could we go to Hell? Yes, but Christians, if we take His Word seriously have the assurance we can avoid that place.

Romans 2:12-16 New King James Version (NKJV)

12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law 13 (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; 14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

Even someone who has never seen a Bible — if he considers what God has written in his heart — can avoid Hell. Christians, if they study their Bible, have an instruction manual on how to avoid Hell.

What if we choose to ignore the Bible? There are Christians, thoughtful men and women included among their numbers, who believe that if someone is told about Christ Jesus and refuses to believe, those unbelievers will go to Hell, and there are passages that suggest such a thing. For example:

Hebrews 10:26-31 New King James Version (NKJV)
The Just Live by Faith

26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

However, God is the final Judge. At what point do we receive a knowledge of the truth? So long as we live, we never stop sinning completely. So what exactly does it mean to go on sinning willfully? Only God knows the sins of our neighbors. Only God knows who honestly repents. We each only know our own heart.

We also know what we must do. We must love our Lord, His Word, His Creation, and each other. Is that so difficult? Is the difficulty something we must fear? No? Then we can do what the Bible says, and we can join our Father in Heaven.

  1. Yea I know CT, you will attribute your good post to the resources of others………but rest assured, it takes a special kind of craftsman to put together a mosaic, which you seem to do on a regular basis.

You added, ‘what God has written in the heart……………….,’ yep, no more proof needed. Case closed. There is no greater penmanship than found in the Creator.

Your consistency with putting these things together is awesome. It’s an important gift, and tkx for passing along.

      1. Well friend, it gets better……….many agree with me.

Seriously, though CT, you put together those collected comments and posts with seemingly such ease, and pinpoint the issues at hand like a wasp which doesn’t miss its target.

Good stuff, a rare blend of politics and scripture.
