King Solomon, Wise or Foolish Manipulation?

Here scatterwisdom provides an excellent argument for term limits, and he is right. Term limits would help, but consider how he defines the issue.

“The reason being, especially in local politics, is that incumbent has an inherent power to influence hiring and government purchase contracts. The result is that unless an incumbent really screws up, he will always have thousands of assured votes “in the bag” over a new candidate because of voter support by the job or contract holders, and their relatives and friends, who benefit as a result of the incumbent influence.”

Actually, the Federal Government spends almost twice as much as state and local governments combined. Combined with all the tax laws and regulations they control, Federal office holders have an enormous capacity to buy our votes.

The Federal Government has powers far beyond what the Founder’s intended. Therfore, if we think our local government corrupt, the Federal Government should horrify us.

What would term limits accomplish? Term limits would limit an incumbent’s ability to buy our votes, but term limits cannot solve the basic problem. So long as we are willing to be bought, candidates for public office will buy our votes.

We, not the people we elect, have corrupted our government. Because we are to blame for the people we elect, if we want save our republic, we must first reform our own behavior.

  1. I’ve been thinking about the term limits issue, and came to the conclusion that the phrase “term limits” needs to be a nonstarter. Federal office is one term, period. And a limited time for bureaucrats in their positions as well. No one should be in Federal office long enough to “retire” from it.

Now, perhaps after a three-year gap, if you want to run for an elected office again, go for it. And you can do that as many times as you like, but enough time will have passed that you were not campaigning on the public’s dime, and you are not an incumbent.

This is one part of the problem. Another part is that the government DOES have lucrative contracts to give out, and massive, corruption-attracting cashflow streams to direct. Most of these arise from the federal government’s involvement in things utterly outside the Constitution. Pull that out, and lobbyists will find little to attract them.

With the incentives to corruption removed, behavior of the system will automatically improve.

    1. The one term limit is an interesting idea. Just not quite certain how it would be implemented.

Since the folks in the House Representations only have a 2 year term, one term seems awfully short. So even if you are right, I don’t think there is any way that would sell in Congress. Of course, the only way we will term limit Congress is through a convention of the states. So selling Congress on a one term limit isn’t a problem. However, there is the matter of the state legislatures. The gentlemen in the state legislatures are smart enough to know that anything they impose on Congress will come back to haunt them.

Can we force the Federal Government to abide by the Constitution? If we the people come to the conclusion we must, it is possible. The problem is we each must make the decision to give up all those unconstitutional goodies paid for by “other people.”

  2. Thanks for the reblog.

Your comments made me think about these two thoughts I have about Term Limits and Political Hypocrisy.

First, ever wonder why this statement only applies to one and not any other political office holder.

“Four terms, or sixteen years, is the most dangerous threat to our freedom ever proposed.”

Second, I have to laugh every time I imagine ever State and Federal Elected Representative singing along with this singer on the steps of every Capital Building or City Hall. (There will be a very brief commercial before the performer begins singing.)

    Regards and good will blogging.

  3. Tom, I agree fully about the need to reform ourselves if we have any hope of reforming our government. It amazes me how the same politicians continually get back into office, even after they show themselves to be foolish and therefore undeserving of our continued support. Lord bless.

    1. It is kind of funny, but we usually act as if it is easier to fix somebody else. That’s not true, but even if it was the way we go about it is all wrong.
      1. When we try to use our government to fix our country (and our neighbors), those broken neighbors of ours choose the politicians. Of course, since our neighbors belong to those ignorant masses, our neighbors choose politicians who need fixing. Hence, those politicians don’t know we belong to the vanguard of the proletariat, and they think we need fixing too. Odd how that works.
      2. Each of us, as you well know, is broken, but government doesn’t have a fix. Moreover, we don’t either. How do we get our brokenness repaired? Instead of looking to government and imperfect politicians, we accept Christ, and we return His love and obey His commandments. When we obey His commandments, we don’t need a bunch of big, expensive, ineffective governments to fix our neighbors. We just love each other, and that covers a multitude of sins.
