2 Timothy 3:16-17 New King James Version (NKJV)

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Reading the verses above one might think I would spend more time going through the Bible verse by verse. So why don’t I? Well, to whom did the author (probably the Apostle Paul) address 1 and 2 Timothy? Timothy was a young man well versed in the Bible and Christian teachings. Paul saw Timothy as someone called by God to pastor a church and teach the Word. I have no such calling. I am not Timothy

Consider how the Apostle James begins the third chapter in his epistle.

James 3 New King James Version (NKJV)

The Untamable Tongue

My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. (continued here)

Only Christ Jesus was the perfect man. I stumble in word. I am not able to bridle my tongue, much less my whole body. The best I can do is refrain from pretensions. I am not a Bible scholar.

Because I don’t know enough, I can avoid making any attempt to go through the Bible verse by verse. I have not given my life to studying the Bible. I can avoid the presumption of claiming to know more than I do.

What can I do? I can give my testimony. I can explain why I became a Christian. I can share my joy in what I have learned and how it has affected my life. I can share my increasing faith as I marvel at the perfection of the Bible. The more I study the Bible, the better I understand it, the fewer doubts I have. Nonetheless, to avoid a stricter judgement, I must confine myself to passages I have studied carefully and well understand.

Fortunately, there are those who have given years to Bible study. So from time-to-time I can point to scholars who teach God’s Word and give my support to their ministries.

  1. Tom,

I really appreciate your posting. You have hit the nail on the head… “What can I do? I can give my testimony. I can explain why I became a Christian. I can share my joy in what I have learned and how it has affected my life. I can share my increasing faith as I marvel at the perfection of the Bible.” That’s great advice.

Over the years of pastoring and working with other Christians, I have come to learn the most effective witness for Christ involves telling others about our personal experiences with the Lord and then living a life that shows Christ’s love to others. Thanks for sharing these principles in your posting.

    Lord bless you!

    1. Thank you.

When I look at our country, I can see that the Christian Church has become very weak. There are number reasons for this, but I think the primary reason is that we have elevated secular public education over Christian education, and we have done this to the point where few children actually receive an education in Christianity, thereby proving ignorance is not bliss.

I cannot by myself change what we have done and are still doing to children, but I can help lead adults to Christ. I can do a bit of word of mouth advertising. Hopefully, I can persuade at least a few people to visit a Bible based churches. Then perhaps a pastor or two will lead these people in repentance to the cross of Christ. And Jesus will save them.

If I experience a few moments of embarrassment, so what? As near as I can tell, such is what ordinary people must do to start a Christian revival. Such is what our Lord expects.

I expect a few of those people whose interest I help to spark will go to your blog before they go to a church. So keep up the good work!

      God bless you and yours.
