In a secularized world we can study hard. We can spend most of our lives ceaselessly trying to reduce our confusion. Yet unless we include in our quest a search for Godly wisdom, at best our only gain will be more questions. For knowledge to be of any use, we must know what to do with it.
What is the worst thing that might happen? We may put our learning to a poor use.
James 4:1-6 New King James Version (NKJV)
1 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? 2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. 4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?
6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”
There are essentially three pathways to sin:
- The lust of the flesh. (Question: “What is the flesh?”)
- The lust of the eyes. (Question: “What is the lust of the eyes?”)
- The pride of life. (Question: “What is the pride of life?”)
How does a Christian fight off the temptation to sin. He wears The Whole Armor of God. In SIH’s Think On These Things: Ephesians 6:17b, Rob Barkman discusses the only offensive component of that armor, the Sword of The Spirit.
Previously, we have seen 5 pieces of God’s armour: the Girdle of Truth, the Breastplate of Righteousness, The Shoes Of The Gospel Of Peace, Shield Of Faith, and the Helmet Of Salvation . Now, Paul looks at the final piece of armour… the Sword of The Spirit…
(Eph 6:17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
The Sword Of The Spirit:
1. It is called the “Sword Of The Spirit, which is the Word of God” – Here we find that our piece of armour given to us is clearly defined for us as “the Word of God”. (from here)
