Dot Gov Sites for Children: We Make Propaganda Fun! — Reblogged from Linda Szugyi at Da Tech Guy On DaRadio Blog

communicate“To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.“  — Thomas Jefferson (from here)

Check out Dot Gov Sites for Children: We Make Propaganda Fun!. Our old friend, the writer of NooneOfAnyImport’s Blog, now writes at Da Tech Guy On DaRadio Blog.

Here is how her latest article starts.

Ever wonder how many .gov websites are geared toward children?  Lemme tell ya, there are quite a few.  Ben's Guide

Ben’s Guide, brought to you by the Superintendent of Documents in the U.S. Government Printing Office, provides pretty comprehensive listings, by both subject and agency.  If you click over and give a scroll, you’ll get an idea of the wide range.

Some of the sites are not a surprise–like the DEA wanting to make sure our children know drugs are bad, m’kay?

Of course, the EPA has lots of educational material on how you too can sacrifice your quality of life while people like Al Gore burn more fossil fuel than a small town.  Behold the silliness that is Energy Star Kids.  You can save the planet by turning off your electronics, boys and girls!

(continued here)

If only our government just wasted our money on relatively inexpensive Internet web sites… Because we have grown up seeing and listening to the propaganda produced by our government, we accept government propaganda as normal. It is not normal. There is no provision in our Constitution for our government to tell us how or what to think. However, buying up time in the mass media is a great way for our leaders to manipulate the news media — and us.

Propaganda works, and the target audience is never too young.

  1. I use several government websites regularly to obtain information. I confess that I tend to evaluate the quality of a government website by how easily I can track things down on it. At some level, making as much information as possible available to the citizens is a very good thing. So I guess the question becomes, where do we draw the line between transparency, information access, and education, on the one hand, and what is generally referred to in the post as “propaganda”, a term that I think is intended to have negative connotations.

  2. Thanks for the reblog! Yes propaganda has negative connotations but unfortunately, the word was appropriate for most of these sites. Propaganda is biased, misleading or exaggerating, in order to emotionally sway someone to believe a certain thing. It’s particularly egregious to aim propaganda towards children, b/c they are the easiest to emotionally sway.

The websites varied, some were worse than others. (Social security is your piggy bank, kids! LOL) Some sites I recognized had educational value, and stated so.

  3. I enjoyed it, too.

I have used a number of government sites that are extremely helpful and a few that, because of either design or content or both, are a waste of taxpayors’ money. Even the best of them try to make their sponsor look good, rather than bad. I don’t object to that if the site conveys useful information and make the process of government in a democracy more transparent.

    1. Our government, the Obama Administration, the most transparent in our nation’s history (That is what Obama told us, right?), prepares websites for children so that government will be more transparent?

    1. No, and it probably won’t end with the Obama administration.

I don’t blame Obama for our problems. Unfortunately, he seems to be just the sort of leader we deserve.
