SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 31:3-7

bibleIn Can Christians Drink Alcohol?, we considered a video wherein John Piper summarizes his opinion on the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

For an ease of reference, here is the video.

In this blog post from Settled In Heaven, we consider what the Bible says about the consumption of alcohol.

SIH’s Think On These Things: Proverbs 31:3-7

He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous (Prov 2:7)

The Proverbs Of King Lemuel: Abstain From Fleshly Lusts: Proverbs 31:3-7

3) Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
4) [It is] not for kings, O Lemuel, [it is] not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
5) Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
6) Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
7) Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

King Lemuel now turns our attention to advice, given from His mother, to help us understand the need to turn from the fulfillment of our fleshly lusts which can result in disaster for our lives…

  1. Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reblog, Tom. Lord bless you..

The Biblical teachings concerning alcohol have always been of interest to me. As a Baptist, I know many sound Baptists that use grape juice in the observance of the Lord’s Supper with the understanding that we should abstain from all alcohol. This is what I was taught in my home church and in the beginning of my ministry that is what I believed.

Gradually, as I studied these things on my own, I changed beliefs and now have come to the understanding that I shared in the blog entry. This belief is shared by many other sound Baptists as well. It is interesting to see how even those who are well versed in the Word can come to a difference in understanding on this subject.
I trust you and your family will have a blessed holiday season. May the Lord be glorified in our actions and words as we see family and friends during this time of year.

    1. I would not say we have had the same experiences, but I guess we still arrived at the same place.

I grew up seeing the effects of alcoholism close up. So when I was younger I stayed away from it just out of plain, ordinary fear. As I have grown older, I have not lost that fear. I am just more acquainted with the fact that anything can be either used appropriately or abused.

Thank you for the blessing, and may our Lord bless you and yours too!
