Saying “No” to Halloween

Since it is that time of year…..

  1. I find it (Hallowe’en) an annoying observance (it’s not a holiday in either a religious or secular sense), but it’s essentially harmless (except, perhaps, for its impact on children’s dietary habits). I can recall when it was virtually unknown abroad, but now, when I travel, I see the same kinds of orange and black decorations and shoddy costumes in most of Europe and, to some extent, in Asia at this time of year. In itself, it’s not a big deal other than the vulgarity of merchants’ using it to make money.

If there’s a problem, it is the problem of Christians not paying close attention to the following day. In the Roman Catholic and Anglican traditions, All Souls’ Day is observed with very specific liturgies and does command attention, but I sometimes get the sense that even among these ancient Christian churches, 01 November has lost some of its impact. I certainly will go to services and may even tee up one of several fine requiem choral masses in the evening. Most religions have some recurring rite to memorialize the dead. Novermber 1 is ours in the Christian faith. If one happens to be Christian and has lost touch with these rites, I recommend rediscovering them. They can have an extremely quieting effect on the daily turmoil of the world. Everyone has different reactions at different times to liturgical landmarks, but, for me, at this time, I find All Souls’ (or All Saints’) Day to be more affecting than the usual Christmas drills.
