The dictionaries speak of earthly power, but the word is Latin in origin. Like the ancient Pharaohs of Egypt, many emperors sought to be worshiped as gods (see Imperial cult (ancient Rome)), not being content with earthly power.
What drives such insanity? Is it the moral infection of that thing we call pride? Can we so glorify a leader that he forgets he is only a man? Can we forget our leader is only a man? Can we become so obsessed with ourselves that we forget the infinite power of our Creator?
1 John 2:15-17 New Living Translation (NLT)
Do Not Love This World
15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
Even if we lead the armies of the world, if we do not please God, we become failures. For we can do nothing with this world that surpasses the rewards of pleasing God.
