ARE YOU READY FOR THE CHALLENGE?

Who is  N.T. Wright? I don’t really know. I just know I like this video I found on Meeting Jesus in the Whole Sweep of Scripture at 4thaluv.

What is Meeting Jesus in the Whole Sweep of Scripture about? The author describes how he would like to have met Jesus, and in a curious sort of way we somehow arrive at a neat little video that describes a good way to read the Bible.

How would I like to meet Jesus? If Saint Peter greets me with a smile at the pearly gates, I will be thrilled. Still, I am vain enough to contemplate the possibilities, and because Jesus was, is, and will be, there are many.

Nonetheless, that post at 4thaluv implicitly restricts the possibilities to Biblical times, and if we are not familiar with the Bible, that is quite restrictive. We usually think of Jesus as a cute little baby.baby in the manager Or we think of him as being that suffering man nailed to the cross.nailed to the cross Yet the Bible also speaks of Jesus as an obedient son, a carpenter, the wisest of rabbis, and the Son of God. Just to imagine what it might mean to meet Jesus makes it worth reading the Bible.

  1. Both statements urge us to see the Bible not as a series of small, unrelated vignettes, but as a single, coherent body of work. As Wright puts it, we should consider “the whole sweep of Scripture.” When we think of Scripture in this way, we start noticing the threads that weave in and out of the narrative, drawing seemingly disparate sections together. Imagine reading the Hebrews 11 without having read Genesis and Exodus—you’d be missing out on the background and context that gives the Hebrews passage its depth.

  2. Bishop Tom Wright is one the great contemporary NT scholars. Among the best the Church of England has to offer. He is avidly studied in this country not only in the Episcopal Church, but in other denominations. I’m glad you’ve bumped into him. HIs scholarship on Paul, coupled with Garry Wills lighter, smaller book (“What Paul Meant”) have had a significant impact on my spiritual life. My recommendation is: read as much of Wright as you can find. It’s good for you.
