Good idea! Sounds like a worthy Tea Party project to me.

  1. “1. Why does government exist?”

Which government? I suppose in the ideal case if a government *should* exist, then it should be to do those things which private individuals or organzations cannot do more cheaply, easily, fairly or accurately on their own.

Like the anarchists say “no government is perfect” so all governments fail in some way – it’s a human organization and these are never ideal.

    2. What rights does an individual have?

think most ‘rights’ are context dependent.

    3. When does the abuse of government power begin to violate our rights?

If its abuse then it must be violating someone or something, right? No abuse, no violation?

    4. Would 100 percent taxation be a good idea? Would it be moral? Can you explain your answer?”

taxation on what? earned income? unearned income? capital gains? profits from gun-running/drug-dealing? gambling winnings?

good/bad are totally subjective. The USA had top marginal rates >70% during the ‘golden age of capitalism’ so clearly high marginal rates are not inimical to economic progress.

could ‘100% tax’ be justified? In a total siege economy, it might be.

  2. I really don’t think that you can look at our private industries with a glass is half-empty mentality. Sure, private industry tends to perform jobs cuts – but they usually do so in response to business cycles. As business slows, or competition becomes more fierce, some cuts might have to be made.

not true. Post WW2, after every recession employment never quite recovers to pre-recession levels. The long term trend is towards increased unemployment.

In private industry, if one is willing to work hard, while performing the work in an ethical manner, the employee will be ahead in the game. In doing so, the employee will prosper within that company – and, his or her peers who do not have the same commitment might face the fate of losing their job

a touching view. The reality is your job only exists for as long as it is profitable for an employer to own you labor.

The federal method does not have a “true” reward system. Instead, the employees receive COLA increases, personalized raises, as well as good promotions.

Isn’t this what most working people *would* want for themselves? Assuming the required labor is being performed why shouldn’t COLA, raises and (merit based) promotions be part of the working system?

Perhaps you’d prefer a race to the bottom in which employers drive wages down towards zero (real wages have stagnated/fallen since the 1970s so this process is underway).

As a taxpayer, it was often sad to me, how we were hired in to perform the work for the government workers for a period of time.

so if you were (indirectly) taking money form Uncle Sam you (and your employer) were no longer “wealth creators” you were just “takers.” ?

    1. Jimbo,

I’m trying to figure out what stands behind your motive to be so argumentative. Yet, I don’t think that it’s worthy of the waste of time, because as soon as someone would put their finger on it and indicate such to you, additional arguments would be started by yourself. Given that the 2012 election is over, and Obama / Biden will be moving onto the 2nd term, why do you have such bitterness as a Liberal? Clearly, the table is well laid out for you and your belief system for the next several years.

I will respond with answers to a few of the items you’ve responded to. Then, I’m done with this thread. You can continue to argue with yourself. But, I’m not sure who will win in the end – Jimbo #1 or Jimbo #2?

[“a touching view. The reality is your job only exists for as long as it is profitable for an employer to own you labor.”]

Call it what you will. Your response is a very general response, and I don’t believe that what I indicated with my comments fully absorbed into your head. I always worked with the method of being 2-steps ahead of my supervisor or manager. In doing so, I was the one that received the great raises, the promotions, etc. Would you say that moving up eight pay grades in 17 years is horrible performance? I don’t think you would. Working in private industry is much more rewarding – there are many, many opportunities to learn, move up, move laterally to gain more experience, etc. Yet, you feel that since a corporation has the ability to perform staff cuts at any time, then the idea of working for private industry is not so lucrative? You are really full of nonsense. You want to come in here and argue just for the sake of arguing. I’ve revealed my level of background, and how it relates to where I am today. But, you give very little in the form of yourself, but just continue to post and argue. Again, I can’t understand your need to be so bitter. I should be the one to be bitter because my guy lost. But, you know what? I’m not bitter. I’ll take the high road on this and move along with my life as best as I possibly can. Meanwhile, you’ll still be stuck in your rut no matter who is president and what types of benefit you receive from it.

[“so if you were (indirectly) taking money form Uncle Sam you (and your employer) were no longer “wealth creators” you were just “takers.” ?

Possibly, you fell asleep at your keyboard? You stopped posting mid-sentence. In regards to my role at the time, I provided the services that I was contracted to do. It was my obligation to honor the terms of the agreement, so that I could best deliver what I was tasked to do. It was during those times of being on such an assignment that I was able to carefully observe and assert the opinion that I currently have. After 6 years of being in that line of industry, I left it for the very reason that I did not want to be a “taker” — but, I wanted to be a hard-working contributor in a better working environment. Seeing such agencies without any true direction or leadership was very painful for me to watch because it went against many of my own beliefs and values.

I was very excited at the fact that Mitt Romney had made a comment that he was going to go through each agency to weed out the inefficient components. In this regard, America lost – and, lost big in this past election. Instead, we’ll live with the alternative -and government will continue to bloat, and we’ll have to suffer with additional tax increases – which will be on top of the added expenses that we’ve been paying for fuel and electricity over the past three years.

That’s all for me in this thread. I’m out of here. Enjoy it — I’ll be wearing my headphones and enjoying the music I love, so I won’t be able to hear you arguing.
