AFFIRMATIVE ACTION FOR MINORITY BLOGGERS

Okay! I am kidding. I just like this post and video.

The post is from a Conservative academic/businessman. The commentary is better than the post, but I love this line.

The debates will be interesting: The Action Man versus the Affirmative Action Man.

Here is a video from . H/T to Boudica BPI Weblog.

What was my initial reaction to the video? I wanted to laugh, but I ran into problem. She is obviously too close to the truth. Watch the video. Then what is below will make sense.

nice Look up nice at Dictionary.comlate 13c., “foolish, stupid, senseless,” from O.Fr. nice “silly, foolish,” from L. nescius “ignorant,” lit. “not-knowing,” from ne- “not” (see un-) + stem of scire “to know.” “The sense development has been extraordinary, even for an adj.” [Weekley] — from “timid” (pre-1300); to “fussy, fastidious” (late 14c.); to “dainty, delicate” (c.1400); to “precise, careful” (1500s, preserved in such terms asa nice distinction and nice and early); to “agreeable, delightful” (1769); to “kind, thoughtful” (1830). In 16c.-17c. it is often difficult to determine exactly what is meant when a writer uses this word. By 1926, it was pronounced “too great a favorite with the ladies, who have charmed out of it all its individuality and converted it into a mere diffuser of vague and mild agreeableness.” [Fowler]

“I am sure,” cried Catherine, “I did not mean to say anything wrong; but it is a nice book, and why should I not call it so?” “Very true,” said Henry, “and this is a very nice day, and we are taking a very nice walk; and you are two very nice young ladies. Oh! It is a very nice word indeed! It does for everything.” [Jane Austen, “Northanger Abbey”]

  1. Wow, great find and even better commentary beneath it. How did you find that Jane Austin quote?

My blogroll bud “Weird and Pissed Off” has been an Ann Barnhardt fan for a good while, but I’ve not “clicked on over,” for whatever reason. Perhaps length; this was a long one but well worth it.

Barnhardt basically used “nice” as another way of explaining how dangerous political correctness is. Her message was quite powerful, b/c I had . . . no . . . idea . . . of the evolution of that word. We all know that political correctness changes words, and we all know loads of examples, but not that one.

So a quote comes to mind. Frank Burns, the “village idiot” in MASH saying “it’s nice to be nice to the nice.” He meant it seriously, and sounded like a fool. My hubs and I use that quote all the time when using “nice” in a silly or ironic fashion.

I had no idea that the ironic fashion was the original meaning!

Meanwhile, kids are being taught this “highest virtue” in all earnestness:

    have a great day, Tom

  2. I knew there was a reason I never liked to be referred to as “nice.” For you Christian gentlemen out there, my husband used to struggle with the “niceness” that you find in many Men’s church groups. Then he discovered the John Elredge book “Wild at Heart.” It’s o.k., no its expected, for us to not be mild but be passionate about our beliefs and to call a spade a spade. How many times when someone dies have you heard, “but he was such as nice person, I’m sure he’s in heaven.” As this post attests, there is a big difference between being nice and Christian compassion. Let us know confuse the two.
