The Rush To Judgement

As one might expect, PBS took special care to make a video of President Barack H. Obama‘s May 19th speech Obama Lays Out U.S. Policy on Arab World Amid Uprisings available on YouTube.

This section of Obama’s speech got most of the publicity.

So while the core issues of the conflict must be negotiated, the basis of those negotiations is clear: a viable Palestine, and a secure Israel. The United States believes that negotiations should result in two states, with permanent Palestinian borders with Israel, Jordan, and Egypt, and permanent Israeli borders with Palestine. The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states. The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves, and reach their potential, in a sovereign and contiguous state. Memorial Day is a day we usually reserve for remembering our war dead, or as President Abraham Lincoln put it, those who “gave the last full measure of devotion” (from here). We rarely consider that the sacrifice of those who kill our enemies and break their things might be equally as great. Yet there is a cost that comes with killing.

The Cost Of Killing

We arise from a People with a Christian heritage, one that does not easily condone violence. So when we go to war, many remember of words of Jesus with unremitting angst.

The Last Full Measure…

I suspect many of you, like our family, have plans for this weekend. Memorial Day is often referred to as the unofficial beginning of summer. Pools open, the barbeque grills get cleaned and fired up, and folks often make the first escape to the beach or the lake. But for many, this weekend will be one of remembering the loss of a loved one who gave “the last full measure of devotion” in the defense of this nation.
