After being interviewed by the school administration, the prospective teacher said:
‘Let me see if I’ve got this right.
‘You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning.
‘You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self esteem and personal pride.
‘You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job.
‘You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the final exams.
‘You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Spanish or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card.
‘You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps.
‘You want me to do all this and then you tell me . …. . I Can’t Pray!

THE HAIRCUT

Blessed are those that can give without remembering, and take without forgetting.

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing community service this week.’ The florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill , the barber again replied, ‘I cannot accept money from you, I’m doing community service this week.’ The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a ‘thank you’ card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill , the barber again replied, ‘I can not accept money from you. I’m doing community service this week.’ The Congressman was very happy and left the shop.

The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.

And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it.

BOTH POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON!

When I first read this, I expect I had the same reaction as most people. “Yep! That illustrates the difference!” Then I started contemplate what I would say about this joke, and I realized I was fooling myself.

Because we elect them, our politicians really are not that much different from the rest of us. Of course, most politicians are fairly smart and capable people. That is, they are quite intelligent, but the gift of intelligence does not make us wise. And that is the problem, even though we elect intelligent people to public office, we do not — perhaps we cannot — elect public officials more wise than ourselves. Instead, we elect those people who are willing to promise us what we want, people whose character merely reflects our own.

• The economy is turning around. In spite of the fact President George W. Bush left a bigger mess than anyone knew, the economy is finally turning around.
• Our educational system is improving. Under Obama, the teachers have taken their educational mission to heart, and they are inspiring a new generation of scholars to love learning.
• Our defense posture has never been stronger. All our former enemies are extending us hands of friendship.
• The environment has never been cleaner. Even hungry, starving, and ravenous big white, man-eating polar bears are doubling and tripling in their numbers. The only sad bit of news is the sudden reduction in the numbers of Eskimos.

Then I realized that such a post would not be funny.

• All the people who are out of work would not see the humor.
• All the parents who have the heartbreaking choice between sending their children to a public school, a private school, or homeschooling would not see the humor.
• Military personnel stationed in far off war torn lands, stuck with Obama as their Commander-In-Chief, would not see the humor.
• Employees and stockholders in coal companies, seeing that the government is in the process of destroying their industry, would not see the humor. And the Eskimos probably would not like it either.

So I had a puzzle. I like jokes, but to tell one I have to offend somebody. So what do I do for April Fools Day?  The answer? Well, I guess I will have to swear off ever telling or posting any more jokes. Nope. No more jokes. Never again. Even if I choose to laugh at the escapades of the Fates, I have no right to cause anyone else to feel  bad.

Google “world’s oldest profession”. You will find that Prostitution tops the list. I suppose that’s one small measure of our fallen nature.

Yahoo! Answers, not a particularly great place to get answers, will both confirm prostitution is the oldest profession, here, and suggest another alternative, here. Ironically, Yahoo’s preferred answer for “Is prostitution really the world’s oldest profession?” cites Biblical scripture.

According to religion, YES. Scripture makes all kinds of references to prostitutes. In a sense, scripture of religion is the oldest recorded history, except for any reference to god, which is all hearsay. (continued here)

Is this guy right? I don’t think so. Consider what the Book of Genesis has to say in chapter 2. The key verse is number 15.

Genesis 2:8-15 Amplified Bible (AMP)

8And the Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden [delight]; and there He put the man whom He had formed (framed, constituted).

9And out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight or to be desired–good (suitable, pleasant) for food; the tree of life also in the center of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of [the difference between] good and evil and blessing and calamity.

10Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four [river] heads.

11The first is named Pishon; it is the one flowing around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.

12The gold of that land is of high quality; bdellium (pearl?) and onyx stone are there.

13The second river is named Gihon; it is the one flowing around the whole land of Cush.

14The third river is named Hiddekel [the Tigris]; it is the one flowing east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15And the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and guard and keep it.

At this point Adam is alone with God. There are plants, but no animals, and God will not create woman until after he has created everything else. It is perhaps as some say. God saved the best for last. Yet even after God created woman, prostitution did not exist. You see, the Bible tells the story of creation twice. Chapter 1 of Genesis provides an abbreviated version. This version notes that God created man and woman on the sixth day, ending the day with this observation.

And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good (suitable, pleasant) and He approved it completely. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

And “it was very good”. Is prostitution good? No. Of course not.

What Chapter 2 of Genesis does is elaborate upon the creation of man, ending with a description of marriage.

23Then Adam said, This [creature] is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of a man.

24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall become united and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

25And the man and his wife were both naked and were not embarrassed or ashamed in each other’s presence.

Marriage is good. There is no shame in it.

Therefore, the profession of gardening and the institution of marriage predate prostitution.  Before the first prostitutes (male or female) knew the sinfulness of selling their bodies for sex, Adam knew Eve as wife, homemaker and the mother of his children.

So why do some claim prostitution as the world’s oldest profession. I suspect the answer is as old as sin. Consider how Satan convinced Eve to take a bite out of that apple. He lied. Satan led Eve to believe She would be like God. When we lead others into sin, we lie too. We lie to lend glamor to our sinful behavior, a glamor it never deserves.
