The Prince William-Manassas Family Alliance Blog has posted a list of questions for the candidates for Congress in Prince William County. For fun I thought I would do a little research and see if I could figure out where the candidates stand on my own. What follows is what I found for Adam Cook.
Adam Cook: Member House of Representatives – District 01
Questions for Candidates United States House November 2012 General Election
Please check to indicate if you support, oppose or are undecided about legislation that would:
1. Repeal President Obama’s 2010 Health Care legislation.
Support____________ Oppose __x__________ Undecided ___________
Cook’s issues page includes this paragraph.
“Finally, we must improve on the reforms in the President’s health care law to control costs and improve access to health care for all American families. While the health care reform law was flawed in many respects, I do not support returning to a broken system with skyrocketing costs and tens of millions of Americans unable to obtain health insurance.”

Support____________ Oppose ____________ Undecided _____x______
Cook’s issues page includes this paragraph.
“If elected, I would staunchly oppose the trillion dollars worth of cuts to the Department of Defense and VA that were passed by our current Congress. These cuts, if implemented, would likely lead to the loss of two of our eleven carrier battle groups, one quarter of our fighter jets, one third of our long range bombers and a third of our Army Maneuver Battalions. In addition to drastically reducing our military capacity, these cuts would also be devastating economically to Virginia’s first district, home to 13 military installations and thousands of active-duty military, civilians and small businesses which support America’s defense efforts.”

Some (http://dell.electful.com/candidate/adam-cook/issues/homeland-security) use that to suggest Cook would support increases in missile defense. Maybe, but that is not the point of that statement. Check the reference. If Democrats don’t get their tax increase, Cook apparently intends to blame Republicans for defense cuts.
12, Offer additional income tax deductions for small business.
Support____________ Oppose ____________ Undecided ____x_______
No statement available.
13. Reduce payroll taxes.
Support____________ Oppose ______x______ Undecided _____x______
“Cook’s issues page includes the paragraph below, but the end of 2012 comes up before he would be in office.
With nearly 13 million Americans eager and able to work, but unable to find a job, we should have no greater priority than getting our country back to work. I therefore supported extending the payroll tax cut through the end of 2012, which will create approximately 400,000 jobs this year.”

14. Stop EPA from regulating greenhouse gases.
Support___________ Oppose ____________ Undecided ___x________
Ambiguous statement available.
“Cook would support the oil, coal and natural gas industries in Virginia. “I don’t believe that anytime in the near future that we’re going to produce enough energy, consistently enough from solar and wind, to be able to meet our energy needs,” he said.
While advances in technology showed promise for clean coal and natural gas production, Cook would be mindful of the environmental costs those industries might create. He said his service overseas made him recognize that anything that lessens the country’s dependence on foreign energy is a good thing.” (from http://www2.insidenova.com/news/2012/may/31/6/afghanistan-vet-adam-cook-challenges-wittman-ar-1955537/)
15. Require all states to honor concealed carry permits issued by home state.

17. Allow aliens who entered U.S. illegally before age 16 and remained five years to remain.

18. Schedule more offshore oil and gas sales, including off Virginia.
Support____________ Oppose ____X________ Undecided ___________
Adam Cook, Wittman’s Democratic challenger in the 1st District, opposes drilling off Virginia’s coast because “three-fourths of the area” under consideration is used by the Navy for training exercises.

19. Expand uses of health care savings accounts.
Support____________ Oppose ____________ Undecided _____x______
No statement available.
20. Continue the Bush tax cuts for all taxpayers.
Support____________ Oppose _____x_______ Undecided ___________
Some of the things he would concentrate on would be cutting spending, creating jobs and finding revenue.
On the revenue side, Cook said he would work to eliminate the so-called Bush tax cuts for anyone who makes more than $250,000 a year and eliminate a number of corporate tax breaks, saying that the budget couldn’t be balanced on spending cuts alone.
“It’s not about punishing people who are successful or anything else. Revenue is at a long-term low right now,” he said. (from http://www2.insidenova.com/news/2012/may/31/6/afghanistan-vet-adam-cook-challenges-wittman-ar-1955537/)
Under “Reducing our Deficit”, Cook says something similar.
