HUMBLE PRETENSIONS

cross.pngNone of us are humble. That is perhaps why the dictionary defines the word so poorly.

hum⋅ble  /ˈhʌmbəl, ˈʌm-/ [huhm-buhl, uhm-] adjective, -bler, -blest, verb, -bled, -bling.

–adjective
1. not proud or arrogant; modest: to be humble although successful.
2. having a feeling of insignificance, inferiority, subservience, etc.: In the presence of so many world-famous writers I felt very humble.
3. low in rank, importance, status, quality, etc.; lowly: of humble origin; a humble home.
4. courteously respectful: In my humble opinion you are wrong.
5. low in height, level, etc.; small in size: a humble member of the galaxy.

This definition has nothing to do with God.  Yet God made all we know.  In His universe, seemingly infinite in time, space, and detail, we are as nothing.  In spite of His creation, we think first of ourselves, not Him.

We each protect our egos ferociously.   Pride tempts us to make every attempt to elevate ourselves.  We would hear no thoughts except our own.  We will first listen to flattery and condemn the truth.  If we see excessive pride, it is only in others.  Only the drive to survive and complete abject misery forces any man to conceive of himself as he is.

To be humble is to realize there is but one God.  There is no “me”, “myself”, or “I” that merits worship.  There is only God.  That god, GOD, created each of us.  To be humble is to believe and trust only in Him.
