Dear Friend,

We had a great year in 2009, winning three statewide races by historic margins and making impressive gains in our majority in the House of Delegates.  But now we have another opportunity to send a message to Washington and Richmond by electing Steve Hunt to the Virginia State Senate on Tuesday.

Most of you already know Steve but if you don’t, he is a retired Navy flight officer and a former Fairfax County School Board member. Steve has been involved with numerous community and charitable organizations since making his home in Fairfax 15 years ago.  Few have been more involved at the grassroots level electing Republicans and fighting for conservative causes than Steve Hunt.

Steve is focused on keeping taxes low, reducing government spending and ensure that government is better, not bigger.  I am confident that Steve will never turn away from his conservative principles—and that is exactly what we need in the State Senate at a time like this.

Your help is critical between now and next Tuesday.  Special Elections are all about turnout and this race will be no different.  If we make the calls and knock on the doors necessary to remind our voters about this important election, Steve will be successful.  If we don’t, he won’t. It’s as simple as that! So please join me in helping Steve in this final 72 hour push!

So much is at stake in this race—and not just here in Fairfax:  Democrats currently enjoy a 21-19 majority in the State Senate.  A 22-18 majority would give the Democrats a much better chance of blocking Governor-Elect McDonnell’s fiscally responsible agenda and would allow them to draw their own lines in the 2011 redistricting.  For these reasons, our opponents are throwing the kitchen sink at defeating Steve.  And, what-do-you-know? Dave Marsden NOW even claims to be a fiscal conservative despite his miserable record of supporting tax increase after tax increase.

Thank you for your help to Steve; especially in this, our final push.

Warmest regards,

Keith Fimian

What is your job for Tuesday?  Half of the battle is showing up for the battle.  If you are not there, you have lost the war before it starts.  So let your friends knows that they need to get to the polls.

  1. The ironic part about the contest in the 37th District is that both contenders have a long record of working to elect REPUBLICANS.

Dave Marsden, like many Virginians, spent a substantial part of his earlier years as a “Reagan Republican” but as he began to see the national leadership serving as puppets to the multinational corporations and NOT as representatives of the citizens, Dave made the switch to the Democratic Party.

Mr. Hunt is the of the Bush NeoCon variety of Republican, who can be depended upon to spend on “security issues” while scrimping on social issues, while always doing taking care of the big corporations at the expense of the working Man.

As the national Republican Party began to decay into corruption after the Reagan era, some former Republicans preferred to affiliate with the Libertarians or Constitution Party, rather than go over to the Democrats, Dave Marsden made the prudent decision that, in order to actually be elected, one must be in one of the two main parties.

As a consequence, we have a Reagan Republican turned Democrat, Dave Marsden, running against a NeoCon Republican Steve Hunt.

Fortunately, most Virginians will vote for a good candidate, regardless of Party label (as long as the candidate has emerged from one of the major parties). In this contest, Dave Marsden will be a better advocate for our working class citizens.

In the Eighth District, the contest is between a a former health insurance gatekeeper, Jeff McWaters and a physicist and local business owner, Dr. Bill Fleming. Although Bill Fleming is running as a Democrat, his campaign is built upon real solutions that will help move us back to the road to prosperity. Mr. Fleming’s campaign is a refreshing change from the standard recitation of Party-generated talking points.

Thanks for Citizen Tom for actually discussing the Special Election. The traditional dead tree media has payed scant attention to these two very important contests.

Spam filter will not let me post a link. Google AMERIGROUP. That was McWaters’ company.

    J. Tyler Ballance – Thank you for your fine recommendation of Steve Hunt’s candidacy. When Citizen Tom posted it, you must have checked out usgovernmentspending.com. We certainly need some people in public office who can scrimp a bit on social spending.

  3. Old Fashion Liberal says:

    J. Tyler Ballance – For the same reason we need to elect someone like Jeff McWaters. When health care costs are exploding, we would be fools not to carefully consider a candidate with McWaters’ background. Consider this article about the company he helped to start. I would suggest you check out the company McWaters started. Seems like a nice outfit.

  4. Most of us think that the insurance industry already has TOO MUCH influence in government circles today.

While Jeff McWater’s background as a health insurance gatekeeper does not disqualify him from running for office, the citizens would be nuts to elect him. However, considering that this is the same District that sent that very weird guy, Ken Stolle to Richmond as their Senator, I am not sure if the People of Virginia Beach pay very close attention to who they sometimes vote for.

I have great respect for most folks who run for office, and I am sure that Mr. McWaters is a pleasant fellow to talk with, I just doubt that he would take the cause of job creation for the working Man seriously, whereas Dr. Fleming has run his own business for years. Mr McWaters was a corporate man, but not an entrepreneur like Dr. Fleming.

We desperately need job creation, yet the upcoming bills in pre-filing for the Assembly are mostly the same old rubbish, with nary a Bill that will directly create a single job.

Never mind political labels; this is the time for a man like Bill Fleming in our Senate. He understands that the working class is hurting and has several initiatives ready to provide immediate help as well as to steer us back to prosperity.

Everyone knows how gerrymandered the Eighth District is, but it has been very good for all Virginians to have an open contest between the two main Parties. Hopefully this trend shall continue, so that the citizens will, at least hear alternative ideas and solutions, without the, all too typical, resorting to spouting vacuous, cookie-cutter talking points.

      J. Tyler Ballance – Look at what you wrote. Who is labeling and categorizing people?

The following is from McWater’s website.

In 1994, Jeff tried his hand at starting his own a health-care start-up company. He wrote a business plan at his kitchen table for what would eventually become a Fortune 500 company, AMERIGROUP CORPORATION. Jeff began AMERIGROUP in 1994 with a bold idea: he wanted to build a business focused solely on meeting the health-care needs of low-income families enrolled in publicly funded programs such as Medicaid. His vision ran directly counter to the day’s conventional wisdom, which held that the private sector could not work effectively with government to address the health-care problems that confront poor Americans. By emphasizing preventive medical care that helps AMERIGROUP members stay healthier and keeps their medical costs lower, AMERIGROUP today brings health-care services to more than 1.7 million people nationwide. Fortune magazine currently lists AMERIGROUP as the 509th largest public company in America. Jeff served as the Company’s CEO from its founding until his retirement in August 2007 and continued to serve as Chairman of the Board until May 2008.

Our economy is staggering. Our government is spending too much money and health care is a major cause. Here is a guy who understands the problem and what the government can do, but you think we would be nuts to elect him. Then you have the gall to suggest the People Virginia Beach do not pay close enough attention.
