The following is excerpted from the July 2, 2009 of the Cuccinelli Compass.
Dear Fellow Virginians,
Life First
Well, a bunch of new laws went into effect yesterday – July 1st. And as of today, you can now purchase a “Choose Life” license plate by clicking here to go to the DMV’s webpage. The proceeds go to crisis pregnancy centers around Virginia to help women at an extremely difficult moment in their life. Thanks so much to all the volunteers who do so much work to help these expectant mothers cope with tough circumstances!
Then Freedom
Earlier this year, right here at the Mercatus Institute at George Mason, two professors did a study on the relative freedom of all 50 states. You can see it by clicking here.
Virginia finished ranked 9th overall, with only Tennessee finishing ahead of us among Southern states (Georgia was next at 17th). First was New Hampshire and the bottom of the list wouldn’t surprise you at all. Sadly, our neighbor Maryland was 46th, of course, that is part of the reason that business growth in the Washington metro area has focused in Virginia for decades now. I guess these policies really do have consequences…
No study like this is perfect, but it is an interesting comparison. There were four categories of freedom examined: fiscal, regulatory, and economic policies and personal freedom. Of particular interest to me as a candidate for Attorney General was the fact that Virginia did worse (17th) on regulatory policy than on any of the three other measures. Sounds like something an Attorney General ought to address!
I’ll see what I can do about that … with your help!
NRO
No, not the National Reconnaissance Office, located in an unspecified building (or four) on Route 28 that nobody knows about (that’s a joke for anyone who might be concerned that I’m giving away state secrets).
NRO refers to National Review Online, as they had an article on our campaign this past week. You can read it here. We appreciate those rare reporters that are actually positive in writing about our campaign. So, read it now, who knows what we’ll see as we go forward!
Here’s an article from not too long ago in the Washington Post. I won’t complain too much, but you can get the sense of a VERY different tone!
