kgotthardt - Whether we have a capitalist system or a socialist system, greed and selfishness will exist in human beings. The important thing is that we each strive to understand what is good and learn to do good.

In spite of the fact the success of capitalism depends upon human greed, it has merit. Capitalism encourages good behavior. When we each own ourselves and the fruit of our labors, in order to thrive we each must form voluntary associations based upon trust and mutual benefit.

Socialism, on the other hand, is based solely upon the force and power of government. Socialism enables the powerful to own and control everything and everybody.

Consider the simple fact that the most bloodthirsty regimes in recent history were all without exception socialist regimes. While it is hard not to consider a stampede of greedy consumers more than a little disgusting, with respect to sheer human depravity such a stampede does not even come close to the sins performed by the Nazis or various communist regimes.

I would also argue there is a distinct lack of respect for humanity and life.

The sad thing is we have become accustomed to hearing about terrorist attacks. The Wal-mart trample is a new one and says something about capitalism as well as our society.

I read a comment in the paper about India. Instead of being horrified about the attack and killings, this person wondered why no one mentioned how crazy India is. S/he goes on to cite how Indians are easily worked up or some such nonsense. What an insult to the dead and their families, never mind an insult to India!
