FAIRY TALES

Cartoon from here.

We all love fairy tales.  We all want to believe them.  Yet it is good that we tell children fairy tales.  Children enjoy the entertainment.  Fairy tales exercise their imaginations.   From hearing fairy tales children also begin to learn how to distinguish the difference between what we want to believe and what is real.

Nevertheless, no matter how many fairy tales we hear, we never entirely learn the difference between fairy tales and reality.  Are there are not always enough dreamy suckers for salesmen to make a living?  Is there not always at least one politician in every contested race who makes fairy tale promises?  Don’t the tellers of fairy tales too often win?

So we need skeptics, people willing to question the truth of fairy tales promises.  Here are some examples of good skeptics.

  • The Virginian Federialist points out Barack Obama’s silence as to how two critical mandates in his health care plan will be enforced (see here).
  • Isophorone wonders why Fairfax County Democrats do not want to let the military vote (see here).
  • The Mason Conservative joins his voice with those wondering why the Los Angeles Times cannot release that tape (see here).
  • American Civilization (see here) and Virginia Virtucon (see here) question the notion that opposing higher taxes is selfish.
  • Using a New York Times article (of all things!), Dogwood Pundit reminds us that Bush has made a difference (see here).
  • From On High wonders about the Roanoke Times (see here and here).  I think Jerry wants to make sure we vote regardless of what the papers say.
  • Shaun Kenny questions the source of the money (see here).
  • The Mud Pit is skeptical (The pluses do not equal the minuses.) of the Obama tax cut (see here and here).
  • Crystal Clear Conservative remains skeptical of an Obama victory (see here).
  • Spark It Up provides a link to the most watched campaign video (see here or activate the video below).

The core value of Western Civilization is love.  Because we love our neighbor, we each grant our neighbor his (or her) liberty.  Unfortunately, because some love themselves too much, we must remain skeptical of each other’s motives.
