We are told over and over again that the “people” are hungry for politicians who stand on principle, yet when one appears he is ridiculed as being some sort of extremist and is expected to disappear when he loses.

Meanwhile, during the last election cycle less than half of the 40 Senate races and barely a third of the House of Delegate were contested.

The first amendment guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press. The tenth amendment prohibits the federal government from getting into activites not authorized by the Constitution. Seemingly, the tenth amendment would preclude the Federal Government from financing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. But nobody except us “extremists” seem to notice the contradiction between Law and practice.

Whether it is a huge company, a huge nonprofit, or big government, we have to ask the same question. Is this about solving a problem? Or is someone grasping for as much power as he can get?

I prefer Jefferson’s language from the Virginia Statute: “[T]o compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves, is sinful and tyrannical; . . . ”

I would like to ask Mr. Jefferson whether that includes tax payments for public opinion factories we call public schools. To wit, the University of Virginia.

It is also the reason “faith based” welfare is so poorly conceived—it’s all tax based.
