This turned out to be a long convention. That is because the elections for the State Central Committee and the Delegates to the Republican National Convention lasted for three ballots.
Jay O’Brien served as the temporary chairman. He did a great job.
We were visited by quite a few of our elected Republicans and candidates. Attorney General Bob McDonnell (running for Governor, 2009) spoke, and he urged folks to get behind our presidential candidate, John McCain. Congressman Tom Davis graciously introduced Keith Fimian. When Fimian spoke, he made a strong case for smaller government, particularly with respect to resolving our nation’s energy problems.
Bob Berry, Jim Gilmore and Bob Marshall all spoke. So did Senator Ken Cuccinelli (running for Attorney General, 2009). In addition, all the candidates for the contested positions also spoke. Nonetheless, with three ballots, even all those speakers were not enough to fill the time. So Jay O’Brien spent plenty of time at the podium. That was the first time I have ever seen Jay O’Brien get even a little tired of the opportunity to speak.
