Last Thursday, when Congressional Democrats decided to call the vote at the point they found most convenient (see here), the Republicans walked out, crying foul play. Once they saw Republicans would win the vote, what apparently happened is that some Democrats decided to change their votes.
For too many politicians, appearances seem to matter as much as substance. So when Republicans proposed a measure that would prohibit illegal aliens from receiving certain benefits such as food stamps, housing assistance, and employment opportunities now included in an agricultural spending bill, some Democrats voted with the Republicans — until they saw the Republican amendment would pass. Then they changed their votes. However, the hypocrites were too late. The clock had run out. Fortunately for them, the House leadership broke the rules and extended the time on the clock. Some people will do anything to win.
The Democrats apologized, but they retained their “victory”, and of course, they justified their behavior by saying Republicans had done the same when they controlled the House. Such is a failsafe argument. As everyone knows, two wrongs always equal a right.
What has happened to the honor of the people who lead us?
