The Virginia General Assembly thinks we have too much dough in OUR pockets. Whether we like it or not, they want to tax us — for our own good, of course. If the dough is still in our pockets, how are they going to wisely spend it for us? So they gave the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) an unconstitutional power to tax us more than people in the rest of the state. Supposedly, that is a transportation fix.
Fortunately, our local legislators are still nervous about exercising their newfound tax powers. They want to see if you will look the other way. So they have scheduled meetings to see if anyone will bother to show up. Will you? One way or another you will pay. You have a choice, you can pay with a little time by showing up, or you can let the NVTA empty your pockets.
Here is the critical meeting for folks in Prince William and Manassas.
An NVTA vote on whether or not to levy seven different fees and taxes is expected July 12.
Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park officials are hosting a town hall meeting on Thursday when residents can offer their input on how to spend the $100 million.
“Part of it is to demonstrate to the public that we’re here to do something,” Prince William Supervisor Martin E. “Marty” Nohe, R-Coles.
He’s helping host Thursday’s meeting, where he hopes people will learn more about coming decisions that might ease some traffic jams in Northern Virginia.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Auditorium at George Mason University, Prince William Campus, 10900 University Blvd. in Manassas.
At 6:30 p.m. attendees can begin to sign up to make comments.
