Using the vehicle of an unconstitutional travesty of law, Congress is about to vote to give the citizens of the District of Columbia a vote (here). This legislation is being sold to Republicans as an ingenious constitutional and political compromise that provides cowardly Republicans political cover (here). Moreover, voting for this bill is suppose to be a nice and proper thing to do (here and here); it is mean to oppose it.
However, the legislation settles nothing. DC statehood advocates will still clamor for statehood and two senators (here and here). If the Supreme Court does not declare this travesty unconstitutional, what this bill actually does is set a precedent for giving DC two senators. Democrats, ever willing to pursue power politics over constitutional law can be counted upon to use this precedent.
The alternative is constitutional and more just. Give the residential areas of DC back to the state of Maryland. No one needs to have their voting residence in the District of Columbia. Then revoke the 23rd amendment to the constitution (here). That settles the issue, and it gives the citizens of the DC full representation in Congress.
