Which Country Does This Man Think He Leads?

There are times when I wonder why I campaigned President Bush. On the Iraq issue, Bush has carried on with admirable tenacity. Yet whenever I contemplate the immigration issue, I have one of those times. This AP article well illustrates my consternation over Bush.

During the last election, if Republicans had honestly fought to defend our borders, they easily could have won. However, the Republican Party’s lame stance on one issue, immigration, made it readily apparent too many Republicans did not deserve the electorate’s support.

Instead of defending of our borders, the Republican Party’s leadership chose to kowtow to those in the business community who make big bucks off the labor of illegal immigrants. Unfortunately, the alternative, the Democratic Party, has proven itself a worse choice. So the results of 2006 elections have become national disaster. Nonetheless, in one AP quote, Bush seems almost content with Republican losses. “My mood is optimistic because the mood in Congress seems like it’s changed,” Bush said (in reference to the immigration issue).

Republicans cannot fix the Democratic Party. Republicans can, however, clean up their own party. We have primaries and conventions for a reason. These events should not guarantee incumbency. If the guy we have in office will not do the job we nominated him to do, we need to replace him.
