Why I Will NOT Support John McCain

George Will has an interesting commentary in the Washington Post’s Outlook section today, “A Retreat on Rationing Free Speech?“. Will discusses a recent court decision relating to the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 and how the news media has reacted.

Like George Will, I am also dead set against McCain-Feingold “reform.” I believe that legislation is clearly unconstitutional, and I will not support the election of people who sponsor such laws. Consider that the first amendment says that both you and I as well the news media are entitled to speak our minds. However, it seems that much of the news media is only interested in freedom of the press. Don’t you wonder why?

Bill of Rights — Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The legislation is a sham. He wants to clean up the campaign system? Don’t hamstring the people and their right to donate (or not) to the campaign of their choice. Instead, start with the lobbyists whose job it is to feed the cookie monster. In order to do that, we need to reform and then eliminate the abuse of earmarks.

Good post by the way, and thanks for your kind comments!!!
